MGP #8 - Folk/New Age music
I haven't had this feature this year yet, but beware it's still going to be about music. I've already covered Beautiful Voices and Nu-Metal.
This time I'll talk about my other passion - folk and/or new age music.
These days it's hard to differentiate between these two because most of the singers or bands I love would have some sort of fusion in their music: pure folk, a bit of electronica and funky new age mix. See for yourself.
DEAD CAN DANCE
These two have been going on for decades, and both are extremely talented artists in their own right. I've already mentioned Lisa Gerrard unearthy voice in Beautiful Voices, she also co-writes so many gorgeous soudtracks for the movies, you wouldn't believe her track record... Man On Fire, Layer Cake, Gladiator and many more. Brendan Perry is different but if I could compare the impact of his songs on people, I'd say he is a musical version of Coelho.
Nierika (Brendan Perry/Lisa Gerrard)
These two are in their 50s right now, and their voices are glorious...
STEELEYE SPAN
Thanks to my hubby who dragged me to their concert in Brighton. Classic British folk band.
ИННА ЖЕЛАННАЯ/INNA ZHELANNAYA
Originally part of Farlanders, Inna has been experimenting with folk and electronica fusion for many years. She has strong Russian Folk music voice and I really love what she does.
STELLAMARA
Beautiful Balkan voice, magical music.
DEEP FOREST
I can't think of any band more deserving to be in this list. These guys really revitalized folk fusion popularity with their clever and beautiful new age mixes. I've loved them since I was 13-14(?)... You know, I don't quite remember.
So this is it, my top five folk music choices which I listen to from time to time.
Any folk music lovers here? New age music? Throw me some names of other musicians to check out, and thanks for listening!

The song by Stellamara is beautiful! :)
ReplyDeleteYou should hear her Kyrie Elison - really lovely song! Thanks for listening, Petra! ;)
ReplyDeleteI actually liked them all, and found their voices and the instrumental portion to be lovely..i just wish i understood the lyrics to some of them. A little is lost, while i can feel the emotions i am missing the story.
ReplyDeleteThanks for listening, Kimba! If it helps I only understand the Russian one.
ReplyDeleteDead Can Dance doesn't have any words in their song, Steeleye Span sings in Latin, Stellamara in one of the Balkan languages and Deep Forest first in Hungarian (maybe), and then have no clue in what language :))) It's all about emotional impact of the sound I think.
I love this stuff :)
ReplyDeleteLoreena Mckennit has my heart
It is kind of good not to understand the lyrics. So, you can focus on music and set your imagination free to fly. Personally I prefer no lyrics new age music like Kitaro, Rixa White, Yanni, Enigma and even Jean Michel Jarre.
ReplyDeleteThanks for introducing these acts, Katrina. I did not know them.
