Courting Darkness by Yasmine Galenorn REVIEW
Courting Darkness by Yasmine Galenorn (Otherworld/Sisters of The Moon #10)
boughtSynopsis from Goodreads
We're the D'Artigo sisters: sexy, savvy ex-operatives for the Otherworld Intelligence Agency. But being half-human, half-Fae means our powers go haywire at all the wrong times. My sister Delilah is a Death Maiden and werecat who belongs to the Autumn Lord. My sister Menolly is a vampire who's dating a gorgeous werepuma, and the godfather of the undead-set. And me? I'm Camille, Priestess of the Moon Mother, married to a dragon, a youkai, and a Svartan. But my dragon father-in-law has decided that he doesn't like having me for a member of the family...
It's Winter Solstice, and Aeval welcomes me into her Court of Darkness. With Morio still dangerously weak from his injuries and Vanzir alive only thanks to my silence, the thought of training under Morgaine doesn't seem as daunting as it did. But then, Hyto returns to shatter my life. Captured and swept off to the Dragon Reaches, can I manage to stay alive long enough to escape, even as Smoky's father intends to break my spirit, then my body?

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Camille's books always come out as the strongest of the set. For those of you who are unfamiliar with Yasmine Galenorn, she writes a unique type of urban fantasy, very pagan, full of magic and all sorts of different paranormal creatures. The story in each book follows three half-fae/half-human sisters who along with their friends and family battle a demon who tries to collect seven seals which protect the Earth, and open it to demon invasion and ultimate destruction.
Camille is the eldest and weakest of three sisters. She is a witch and relies on her unstable magical talents and steely will to do what needs to be done. As a consequence she seems to be suffering the most through the series.
This time Hyto, a psychotic father of her dragon-husband Smoky (she has three!) kidnaps her and tortures the hell out of her to get to his son and kill him. It's a very difficult and painful journey of a woman who refuses to be broken, who finds strength in her anger in order to defeat her enemy and the enemy of her loved ones.
Very little in this book is about the war with the demons, it deals with Hyto once and for all, but don't worry, the action doesn't become boring or stilted because of that.
I adore Camille, she is a testament to all women and their inner strength, and I think she will stay one of my favourite UF characters for a long time to come.
Recommended for the fans of fantasy, Dark Swan series by Richelle Mead and Meredith Gentry series by Laurell K.Hamilton.

8.5/10
I think Courting Darkness is my favorite book in the series so far - and I have to wonder if it is because it's not about the pending demon war.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed the fact that this book centers around Camille and a struggle that she is facing alone - without her sisters or her husbands.
I'm glad you enjoyed it too. Have a great weekend.

I've never heard of this series before, but thanks to you, I really want to know more! It's so cool how they mix human and fae together, and then throw in cool things like demons and dragons into the mix too! It's like a whole bunch of awesomeness stirred up into one small pot! :)
ReplyDeleteAwesome review, Karina! Thanks for putting this series on my radar! <3
I've got the first two books in this series I must get round to reading them. Thanks for the great review.
