Kindling The Moon by Jenn Bennett (Arcadia Bell #1)
won from The Book Garden
Synopsis from Goodreads
Meet Arcadia Bell: bartender, renegade magician, fugitive from the law. . . .
Being the spawn of two infamous occultists (and alleged murderers) isn’t easy, but freewheeling magician Arcadia “Cady” Bell knows how to make the best of a crummy situation. After hiding out for seven years, she’s carved an incognito niche for herself slinging drinks at the demon-friendly Tambuku Tiki Lounge.
But she receives an ultimatum when unexpected surveillance footage of her notorious parents surfaces: either prove their innocence or surrender herself. Unfortunately, the only witness to the crimes was an elusive Æthyric demon, and Cady has no idea how to find it. She teams up with Lon Butler, an enigmatic demonologist with a special talent for sexual spells and an arcane library of priceless stolen grimoires. Their research soon escalates into a storm of conflict involving missing police evidence, the decadent Hellfire Club, a ruthless bounty hunter, and a powerful occult society that operates way outside the law. If Cady can’t clear her family name soon, she’ll be forced to sacrifice her own life . . . and no amount of running will save her this time.

Beautiful cover, isn't it? Tony Mauro's job. This is a really strong beginning of the new series. Original setting, good, kind sense of humour, easy to love main characters.
This book wasn't as explosive as I thought it would be, but it built up a solid base for the next installment.
Arcadia Bell is a 25-years-old magician who was borne with some unusual even for magicians abilities, - she can see halos of all the Aethyric and Earthbound demons around her. Not only that, she also has her own halo.
She believes that her parents were set up and accused of murders of other occultists when she was just a teen. The family split up and since then has been on the run. Now Arcadia received an ultimatum, - bring her parents to justice of replace them and die.
She only has couple of weeks to prove their innocence and asks for help of enigmatic Lon Butler, a famous photographer and demonologist. Their relationships are uneasy from the start. Lon is not who he seems, although he does have a very charming babbling teenage son who endears Cady straight away. Lon is sarcastic and sharp but also quite domesticated :)
The more Lon gets involved into the investigation the more he sees Cady's sincerity and tries to help. They go through quite an adventure together, and the sexual attraction gets really hot!
There is a lot left unsaid in this book, the end leaves plenty of open possibilities, and overall it's a very comforting and not too harsh urban fantasy. i think it's perfect for someone who wants to start reading this genre.
Next book Summoning The Night comes out on 24/04/2012. The cover is gorgeous!

8.5/10
