Review: Easy by Tammara Webber

Easy by Tammara Webber

Synopsis from Goodreads
When Jacqueline follows her longtime boyfriend to the college of his choice, the last thing she expects is a breakup. After two weeks in shock, she wakes up to her new reality: she’s single, attending a state university instead of a music conservatory, ignored by her former circle of friends, stalked by her ex’s frat brother, and failing a class for the first time in her life.

Her econ professor gives her an email address for Landon, the class tutor, who shows her that she’s still the same intelligent girl she’s always been. As Jacqueline becomes interested in more from her tutor than a better grade, his teasing responses make the feeling seem mutual. There’s just one problem—their only interactions are through email.

Meanwhile, a guy in her econ class proves his worth the first night she meets him. Nothing like her popular ex or her brainy tutor, Lucas sits on the back row, sketching in a notebook and staring at her. At a downtown club, he disappears after several dances that leave her on fire. When he asks if he can sketch her, alone in her room, she agrees—hoping for more.

Then Jacqueline discovers a withheld connection between her supportive tutor and her seductive classmate, her ex comes back into the picture, and her stalker escalates his attention by spreading rumors that they’ve hooked up. Suddenly appearances are everything, and knowing who to trust is anything but easy.

You guys might remember how much I despised Beautiful Disaster last year? I was absolutely fuming, and it had nothing to do with Ms McGuire's ability to write (she can write really well and the book is entertaining) but with the message this book carries to any young adult who might read it.

Easy is a complete opposite of that wretched book. It's gorgeous, it's about girl power and respect and freedom of choice and all the right choices you can make in bad situations, and...and... I loved it so much I nearly cried.

I wish every girl had a boyfriend like Lucas. He listens. He never accuses. He lets you set the pace, and at the same time he is uber sexy and hot and just overall wonderful.

This book is completely realistic and deals with problems in a very real grounded way. There is no theatrical drama and over the top responses. Tammara Webber avoids cliche, mean girls and stupid BFFs.

Jacqueline whose boyfriend of three years just broke up with her is reclaiming herself and her own identity, and her best friend Erin as brilliant and supportive the way your best friend should be. You don't really feel ill towards her ex as well. He is stupid, he made a silly mistake, but when he realises that, it's too late and Jacqueline moves on.

The book tackles serious issues of rape, near-rape, intimidation, bullying and attempts to shame a girl into silence. Don't worry, there are no details, because we are living through the attempts to get through PTSD and a need to speak up, not revelling in what happened.

If I couldn't persuade you enough to read this wonderful book, read Dear Author review which made me go and get this book and start reading it immediately!

SOLD! Avoids YA cliches? Yes, please.

You better hope McGuire doesn't find this review or she'll be yelling at you about how her book isn't ya. She's one of THOSE authors.

I know, I've followed all that storm in a teacup through Goodreads, Christina! :) The thing is, Ms McGuire is a good author, I just disagree with the direction of the book, not with her talent. To me the book had 2 mature young adults in college and that's why it would have attracted YA readers of the same age group no matter what, which means it was a YA read, no matter what the stamps say.

I can't wait to start this one. I just have a couple books I have to get through first. What grabbed my attention when I first heard about Easy was it's New Adult, which is a genre I absolutely love and am so excited to see more of these days. But I love that this book, while dealing w/ some heavy, relevant issues, is also an empowering book. Those are the type of books that young women need to read more of:) So glad you liked this one Kara, that makes me even more excited to read it:)

I haven't heard this expression before, Heather. New adult? I have to look into it. As I said, I love recommendations from Dear Author, they do find some really lovely and quirky reads, especially among self-pub authors. Hope, you enjoy this book! :)

Sounds good, but now I am more wondering why you were fuming over that other book..I must find out at once

Ahaha! There is a link in this review to it right on the top, Blodeuedd! ;)

Glad you loved this book. Unfortunately, we're the exact opposite. I kinda loved BD (please don't hate me!) and I didn't enjoy Easy as much as I'd thought I would.

kara-karina@Nocturnal Book Reviews said...

Hahaha, of course I don't hate you, Joy! You are an adult and you can read BD and think "right, he might be hot, but I wouldn't be able to stand him in real life", right? but there are young girls who read about this sort of jerks and think this sort of characters must be a norm, and that's a universal problem in books and on TV - low expectations coming from low self-esteem and allowing your so-called partner to treat you like sh*t. That's what I generally rant about and what I've seen in plenty YA books, which is why I was so pleased to read a book about girl power and respect, because they are in minority.
Well, I better shut up now, I can go on for ages about a topic like that :)))

In case of zombie apocalypse

Hey, guys! I feel like I should say this just in case :)
If you'd like to sponsor a fellow book addict who sometimes can't sleep at night worrying that she won't have enough books to read if internet goes down in the event of zombie apocalypse (I'm convinced it's one of the top five ways to go for human race) you can donate through Paypal to olivesandacorns at gmail dot com or buy a book through any of the links provided with my reviews which will send me a small percentage from the sale. All proceeds will go towards my enormous TBR. I will also shelter you on the remote farm in Portugal when zombie apocalypse starts provided you survive getting there. There will be books, yay?
Thank you! Love you all
