Summary

A brilliant, lush, sweeping historical novel about the rise of the most powerful woman of the Middle Ages: Hild

Hild is born into a world in transition. In seventh-century Britain, small kingdoms are merging, usually violently. A new religion is coming ashore; the old gods’ priests are worrying. Edwin of Northumbria plots to become overking of the Angles, ruthlessly using every tool at his disposal: blood, bribery, belief.
Hild is the king’s youngest niece. She has the powerful curiosity of a bright child, a will of adamant, and a way of seeing the world—of studying nature, of matching cause with effect, of observing human nature and predicting what will happen next—that can seem uncanny, even supernatural, to those around her. She establishes herself as the king’s seer. And she is indispensable—until she should ever lead the king astray. The stakes are life and death: for Hild, her family, her loved ones, and the increasing numbers who seek the protection of the strange girl who can read the world and see the future.
Hild is a young woman at the heart of the violence, subtlety, and mysticism of the early medieval age—all of it brilliantly and accurately evoked by Nicola Griffith’s luminous prose. Recalling such feats of historical fiction as Hilary Mantel’s Wolf Hall and Sigrid Undset’s Kristin Lavransdatter, Hild brings a beautiful, brutal world—and one of its most fascinating, pivotal figures, the girl who would become St. Hilda of Whitby—to vivid, absorbing life.

Summary

A dark, romantic fantasy set against the backdrop of San Francisco devastated by the Great Quake

It is the dawn of a new century in San Francisco and Delia Martin is a wealthy young woman whose life appears ideal. But a dark secret colors her life, for Delia’s most loyal companions are ghosts, as she has been gifted (or some would say cursed) with an ability to peer across to the other side.

Since the great quake rocked her city in 1906, Delia has been haunted by an avalanche of the dead clamoring for her help. Delia flees to the other side of the continent, hoping to gain some peace. After several years in New York, Delia believes she is free…until one determined specter appears and she realizes that she must return to the City by the Bay in order to put this tortured soul to rest.

It will not be easy, as the ghost is only one of the many victims of a serial killer who was never caught. A killer who after thirty years is killing again.

And who is now aware of Delia’s existence.

It just reminds me of The Diviners by Libba Bray, and that's why I can't let it go past me!

Summary

A lyrical novel about family and friendship from critically acclaimed author Benjamin Alire Sáenz.

Aristotle is an angry teen with a brother in prison. Dante is a know-it-all who has an unusual way of looking at the world. When the two meet at the swimming pool, they seem to have nothing in common. But as the loners start spending time together, they discover that they share a special friendship—the kind that changes lives and lasts a lifetime. And it is through this friendship that Ari and Dante will learn the most important truths about themselves and the kind of people they want to be.

It looks quirky, and I love quirky books :)

Summary

No one creates realms like New York Times bestselling author Anne Bishop. Now in a thrilling new fantasy series, enter a world inhabited by the Others, unearthly entities—vampires and shape-shifters among them—who rule the Earth and whose prey are humans.
As a cassandra sangue, or blood prophet, Meg Corbyn can see the future when her skin is cut—a gift that feels more like a curse. Meg’s Controller keeps her enslaved so he can have full access to her visions. But when she escapes, the only safe place Meg can hide is at the Lakeside Courtyard—a business district operated by the Others.

Shape-shifter Simon Wolfgard is reluctant to hire the stranger who inquires about the Human Liaison job. First, he senses she’s keeping a secret, and second, she doesn’t smell like human prey. Yet a stronger instinct propels him to give Meg the job. And when he learns the truth about Meg and that she’s wanted by the government, he’ll have to decide if she’s worth the fight between humans and the Others that will surely follow.

It keeps getting great reviews, but I honestly don't know when I'll be able to afford it. The price is £16, it's an unknown author for me, and it's only available in hardback, so NO. I won't be buying it. :(

Summary

Marcus aka “w1n5t0n,” is only seventeen years old, but he figures he already knows how the system works–and how to work the system. Smart, fast, and wise to the ways of the networked world, he has no trouble outwitting his high school’s intrusive but clumsy surveillance systems.

But his whole world changes when he and his friends find themselves caught in the aftermath of a major terrorist attack on San Francisco. In the wrong place at the wrong time, Marcus and his crew are apprehended by the Department of Homeland Security and whisked away to a secret prison where they’re mercilessly interrogated for days.

When the DHS finally releases them, his injured best friend Darryl does not come out. The city has become a police state where every citizen is treated like a potential terrorist. He knows that no one will believe his story, which leaves him only one option: "M1k3y" will take down the DHS himself.

With the rise of hacktivism, this is a book actually relevant to the times we live in plus I really enjoy Cory's articles and ideas. I should have read it ages ago, really!

Summary

A lyrical and deeply moving portrait of grief, blame, and forgiveness, and of finding the courage to confront your ghosts — one truth at a time.

As soon as she was under, Maggie heard the quiet, though every sound was amplified in her ears and in her brain . . . Sound, like shame, travels four times faster under the water.

Though only a sophomore, Maggie Paris is a star on the varsity swim team, but she also has an uncanny, almost magical ability to draw out people’s deepest truths, even when they don’t intend to share them. It’s reached a point where most of her classmates, all but her steadfast best friend, now avoid her, and she’s taken to giving herself away every chance she gets to an unavailable — and ungrateful — popular boy from the wrestling team, just to prove she still exists. Even Maggie’s parents, who are busy avoiding each other and the secret deep at the heart of their devastated family, seem wary of her. Is there such a thing as too much truth?

I am fascinated with the concept. Has anyone read this one yet?

Summary

Verity Montague is a servant in 1692 Salem. Her flaming red hair and mismatched eyes make her a prime target for accusation of witchcraft. Orphaned during the Indian raids, she and her brother with Asperger's Syndrome come to live with the key historical figures of the trials-The Putnams. They keep their synesthesia secret- that days, months and years appear as color in Verity's mind, and for John, that symphonies play in a Fantasia-style performance of colors and geometric patterns.

Truman Johnstone 's ability to discern people's expressions, and decipher if they were lying- made him an outspoken child. Being different kept him from being adopted till he was fourteen. He now runs an orphanage for problem youths, and is a feeding therapist in his desire to help children deal with their peculiarities. To give them the childhood he never had.

The harvest festival corn maze Truman creates every year has an unwelcome visitor. Children hear disembodied voices skipping through the corn maze amid the backdrop of eerie orchestral music. In every year of the calendar, intermittent doors of time swing open and closed, so long as the cornfield stands.

In societies set on sameness-all are outsiders.

They learn the traits that make us outcasts, may be the very ones that make us great, and that true love may heal all, and even transcend time.

Oh God, this just sounds absolutely wonderful. Can I hug this synopsis?

Comments

  1. Written in Red is one I've been seeing and it does look really good. Like you, though, that price is more than I'm willing to pay on an author I don't know. Penguin is one of the worst publishers for marking up their book prices and I really think it hurts them. So many times I chose not to read a book they put out because it was above my $9.99 limit. The only way I go above that is if the author is on my top ten list of favorites like Patricia Briggs.

  2. I'd love to read Written In Red as well - but same as you I will wait for the paperback to come out! :-)

  3. Oooo I had not read the blurb for the next Jean Johnson book yet, I so want it! I love that series. And are you serious that Anne Bishop is a new author for you? You really, really should try her Black Jewels books then. I have re-read them so often! And Written in Red is truly amazing and awesome, and yes, way too expensive. Just wait for the paperback, it will come some day.

  4. Some of these books sound amazing. I especially like The Golden City, Hild, and Delia's Shadow.
I should do this meme, too, there are some great books I'm looking forward to. :)

  5. Oh I didn't know the first one but I love the cover. I'm also curious about the Delia book. Well because of the name lol.

  6. Mistress, I don't do it even for my favorites, to be honest. If the book is not in paperback, I won't buy it. For me it's very often food and heating instead of book buying so my hobby can't eclipse what I need to survive. So I wait for book sales or for my library to get the book.
I think all those books that only come out in hardbacks for $25 for a year hurt publishing business big time. When there is no ebook version or cheap paperbacks, that's when piracy kicks in. Hardbacks have to die (or stay as an option for collectors), they are completely unnecessary.

    Mel, amen to that! :)

Aurian, I honestly never came across her, but look her backlist up. And yes, Hellfire is on my must buy list! :)

Petra, The Golden City just looks and sounds absolutely gorgeous...

D., me too. It looks like Dehlia's book will be awesome! :)

  8. "Mira-freaking-Grant" - you are too funny :D But I completely agree.

I've never read Anne Bishop either but I keep hearing wonderful things about this book. I put it on my wishlist.

You have some good looking books there and a few I'll need to watch for.

  9. I think I like the sounds of Hellfire. All looking good!
