Fantasy NA Review: A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas

A Court of  Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas (A Court of Thorns and Roses #1)

Synopsis from Goodreads
A thrilling, seductive new series from New York Times bestselling author Sarah J. Maas, blending Beauty and the Beast with faerie lore.

When nineteen-year-old huntress Feyre kills a wolf in the woods, a beast-like creature arrives to demand retribution for it. Dragged to a treacherous magical land she only knows about from legends, Feyre discovers that her captor is not an animal, but Tamlin—one of the lethal, immortal faeries who once ruled their world.

As she dwells on his estate, her feelings for Tamlin transform from icy hostility into a fiery passion that burns through every lie and warning she's been told about the beautiful, dangerous world of the Fae. But an ancient, wicked shadow grows over the faerie lands, and Feyre must find a way to stop it . . . or doom Tamlin—and his world—forever.

Perfect for fans of Kristin Cashore and George R. R. Martin, this first book in a sexy and action-packed new series is impossible to put down!

Well, hell! I agree with Ellie from Curiosity Killed The Bookworm that A Court of Thorns and Roses felt like it was written before Throne of Glass - rougher, less polished, but still... You can't take kickass out of Maas! *grinning*

This was dark and delicious, and reminded me of Merry Gentry series by Laurel K. Hamilton in a much, much better way.

Feyre is a youngest daughter of a bankrupt trader. Her family lost everything, her mother died, and on her deathbed made her promise to look after her family. Her oldest sister is kind and clueless, her middle sister is self-centered and sharp-tongued, and her father is a crippled shadow of himself. Feyre at nineteen dreams of older sisters marrying out of the house so she can stop working as hard to provide for everyone with her bow and arrows and return to painting which she adores.

One night she kills a doe and a wolf, who stalks it, sells his pelt, and the next day a Fae comes to her door claiming that she killed his friend and that he will either kill her in retribution or take her back to Prythian, the land of Fae.

In a sense the story starts as Beauty and The Beast, and the core attributes of the famous fairytale remain throughout the novel, but it also gets darker and more complex the further we are in the book. Nothing as we think it is, nothing as it seems.

Tamlin, Fayre's captor, is content to let his sharp-tongued guest be, and she spends more time with his best friend, Lucien, finding out more and more about the land she is in, and the curse it's under.

Fayre is a fighter, a survivor, and I truly admired that in her. She might not have known much before coming into Prythian, but she lived, she had a lover, she had a passion for something more than what an average girl in her village longed for. She has a curious mind, and the more she feels for her host and his friends the more she tries to help them.

The book is split into two parts visually, and it's the second part that truly propels it from an average read to something spectacular in all its gruesome glory. I want to tell you what to expect but I also want you to experience the awesomeness for yourself, so there. Read it, especially if you are a fan of Laurel K. Hamilton, Anne Bishop and Danielle L. Jensen. I am really looking forward to book two in this series!

In case of zombie apocalypse

Hey, guys! I feel like I should say this just in case :)
If you'd like to sponsor a fellow book addict who sometimes can't sleep at night worrying that she won't have enough books to read if internet goes down in the event of zombie apocalypse (I'm convinced it's one of the top five ways to go for human race) you can donate through Paypal to olivesandacorns at gmail dot com or buy a book through any of the links provided with my reviews which will send me a small percentage from the sale. All proceeds will go towards my enormous TBR. I will also shelter you on the remote farm in Portugal when zombie apocalypse starts provided you survive getting there. There will be books, yay?
Thank you! Love you all
