My Guilty Pleasure #1 (new feature)

I'm introducing a new topic and hope you'll enjoy it.:) This is something I plan to do no more than once per month.

My Guilty Pleasure (MGP) is about something that you do when you get tired of reading books in the same genre and try something different. It's your little safety cushion, your favorite read, movie or a silly comforting ritual.
* * *

New feature and general haberdashery

Later today I'm introducing a new feature (hope you like it!) I know I'm excited about it :)

Also don't forget that today is the last day to enter into Magic Slays giveaway which is open for EU, Russia, Belarus and Ukraine residents.
* * *

Magic Slays.

True Blood, anyone?

O_o_o! Did you see the first episode of True Blood Season 4?! Tara, Lafayette and Jason looked so GOOD...
Love that hair. He is one of my favorite characters there! I'm really glad they didn't kill him off like in the books.

* * *

Pam is a Goddess as usual...

* * *

 Couldn't find any more pics, but the twists and turns of the new season are amazing. Tara looks stronger, Jason transformed from never-do-well little brother into this confident hottie in a uniform, even Sookie looked better.

What did you think?

* * *

Book goodies I've collected in the past 2 weeks

Quickly before getting ready for work!
We had an absolutely balmy day here, and it's such a rarity in England :) I'm just sharing my good mood and the books I acquired in the last couple of weeks.
* * *

* * *
Local library has a regular sale, which is where I bought The Demon's Lexicon today for 10p! Plus local bargain shop had these charming cups with matryoshkas for 99p a piece - I had to buy them as my private Russian joke :)

New Redheads!

I solely blame Marta Acosta and her fabulous blog Vampire Wire for this post!

Marta is an author of wonderful series Casa Dracula, which I absolutely adore and recommend to everyone who likes vampires and have a good sense of humor (Aha! now you can't say you don't like them without admitting you lack sense of humor :)

The series are quirky and exquisite, and the language is so lush and ironic, it makes my toes curl in pure ecstasy...

Anyway, couple of days ago she made a post about redheads on the book covers and how she liked them, which made me look at my collection of reds which has grown from my last post about them.

So here it is! More redheads on the book covers. If you know more, please share, and I'll add them to the post.
* * *
Vampire Wire.

Hunt the Moon by Karen Chance review

Hunt the Moon by Karen Chance (Cassandra Palmer #5)

Synopsis from Goodreads
Cassandra Palmer recently defeated a god, which you'd think would buy a girl a little time off. But it doesn't work that way when your job description is Pythia-the world's chief clairvoyant. Cassie is busier than ever, trying to learn about her power, preparing for her upcoming coronation, and figuring out her relationship with the enigmatic sexy master vampire, Mircea.

But someone doesn't want Cassie to become Pythia, and is willing to go to any lengths to make sure the coronation ceremony never happens- including attacking her mother before Cassie is even born.

Perfect Creature (steampunk vampire movie) and spoils of war

You remember, I couldn't believe yesterday that I've never seen this movie or heard about it?
What happened is I was looking for a nice Dracula inspired video on YouTube and stumbled upon the music video made on this movie.
I found it and watched it last night, and oh boy, it was good!

Perfect Creature (2006)
Perfect Creature is set on an alternate world "not unlike our own," but the technology and settings make it look like something from the 1940s with some 18th century Dickens tossed in. The vampires are long-lived, fanged, drink only donated human blood, and call themselves "the Brotherhood." The Brotherhood has taken over the Catholic Church, live loveless, ascetic lives as monks, and exist to serve humans with spiritual guidance and scientific research. Although born of human mothers, Brothers are the result of a now banned genetic science, which caused a mutation that becomes activated when in the presence of a certain virus. Whenever a Brother is born, he is immediately whisked away to be brought up in the Church. There are no female vampires.

The film is made in freaking New Zealand! And it's totally awesome! Steampunk! Alternate reality, wonderful plot (which I can't say about a lot of recent paranormal movies) and great acting. Please, please, watch it! It's so horribly underrated.

Beautiful grey-ish world. Silus, a vampire brother hunting a rogue vampire and Lily, a police detective, they are both fascinating. I loved their pent up emotions and a wonderful kiss in the end. *sigh*

Some pics I could find and a trailer.

Now for the spoils of war blogging!

I really want to read this and watch that!

Just a couple of books that I'm really interested in reading! Both from the authors I haven't read before....

Synopsis from Goodreads
Vampire Stephen Austra, a talented artist renowned for his wondrous restorations of stained glass, is one of a new breed of modern vampires. He doesn't need to hunt, respects human life, and would never hurt a soul. But a series of appalling murders makes his lover, Helen, question her faith in him.

This is an oldie first published in 1989. In my experience War for The Oaks published in 1987 was brilliant, so I hope this one will be great as well. I love the art deco cover and Gothic feel to it.
* * *
War for the Oaks

Synopsis from Amazon
 Ever since a terrible fire killed her older son, one ambition has ruled Countess Lazlaric. Desperate to continue the family legacy, she is determined that her rakehell second son wed and produce an heir. Now, she’s found the perfect bride. A distant relative, writing to beg for help, is ideal for her secret plans.Alone in the world, beautiful raven-haired Senna Landseth finds more than just Drom Manor’s isolation sending a shiver down her spine. Countess Lazlaric seems overly eager to welcome her, strange noises fill the cavernous corridors of the gloomy manor, and she senses she is being spied upon. Then a note mysteriously appears, inscribed with chilling words: “I’m watching you. Nicolai.”In the years since the fire that supposedly destroyed him, Nicolai Lazlaric has inhabited the world of a vampire, consumed with seeking revenge on the creature who turned him. Now, it is time to return to Drom Manor. But Nicolai has no idea how badly the Countess wants an heir—or that his hated brother’s prospective bride is residing there. Senna’s unexpected presence upends Nicolai’s plans, for he can think only of possessing the beautiful innocent, of taking her in a blood-binding seduction from which she will never escape. . . .

I've read an excerpt from Thea Devine website and it had a feel of early Carpathian books by Christine Feehan, which were my first paranormal romances and a touch of Bram Stoker's Dracula. The book comes out on 21/06/11 and I will give it a try. Also the cover is luscious.
* * *

Gratuitous video :) I can't believe I've never watched this movie! Looks wonderful!

Fool Moon by Jim Butcher review

Fool Moon by Jim Butcher (The Dresden Files #2)

Synopsis from Goodreads
Business has been slow. Okay, business has been dead. And not even of the undead variety. You would think Chicago would have a little more action for the only professional wizard in the phone book. But lately, Harry Dresden hasn't been able to dredge up any kind of work—magical or mundane.
But just when it looks like he can't afford his next meal, a murder comes along that requires his particular brand of supernatural expertise.
A brutally mutilated corpse. Strange-looking paw prints. A full moon. Take three guesses—and the first two don't count...

No Hero by Jonathan Wood (early review)

No Hero by Jonathan Wood

Received through NetGalley from Night Shade Books

Synopsis from Goodreads
"What would Kurt Russell do?" Oxford police detective Arthur Wallace asks himself that question a lot. Because Arthur is no hero. He's a good cop, but prefers that action and heroics remain on the screen, safely performed by professionals. But then, secretive government agency MI12 comes calling, hoping to recruit Arthur in their struggle against the tentacled horrors from another dimension known as the Progeny. But Arthur is NO HERO! Can an everyman stand against sanity-ripping cosmic horrors?

P.S. There is a mistake in description. It's MI37, not MI12. Just noticed it. Bad Goodreads!

Rivers of London/Midnight Riot review

Rivers of London (Midnight Riot US release) by Ben Aaronovitch (Peter Grant #1)

Synopsis (from Amazon)
My name is Peter Grant and until January I was just probationary constable in that mighty army for justice known to all right-thinking people as the Metropolitan Police Service (as the Filth to everybody else). My only concerns in life were how to avoid a transfer to the Case Progression Unit - we do paperwork so real coppers don't have to - and finding a way to climb into the panties of the outrageously perky WPC Leslie May. Then one night, in pursuance of a murder inquiry, I tried to take a witness statement from someone who was dead but disturbingly voluable, and that brought me to the attention of Inspector Nightingale, the last wizard in England. Now I'm a Detective Constable and a trainee wizard, the first apprentice in fifty years, and my world has become somewhat more complicated: nests of vampires in Purley, negotiating a truce between the warring god and goddess of the Thames, and digging up graves in Covent Garden . . . and there's something festering at the heart of the city I love, a malicious vengeful spirit that takes ordinary Londoners and twists them into grotesque mannequins to act out its drama of violence and despair. The spirit of riot and rebellion has awakened in the city, and it's falling to me to bring order out of chaos - or die trying.

Moonshine by Rob Thurman

Moonshine by Rob Thurman (Cal Leandros #2)

Synopsis (from Goodreads)
The second novel in Rob Thurman's dark fantasy saga featuring Caliban "Cal" Leandros follows the half-monster protagonist and his older brother, Niko, as they begin a new life in New York City as bodyguards and amateur detectives specializing in cases with a supernatural slant.
After almost destroying the world in 2006's Nightlife, Cal has learned a lot about his mysterious past (he was the product of an experimental breeding program run by the otherworldly and nightmarish Auphe, whose objective was nothing short of annihilating the planet), but many questions still trouble him. However, one thing is certain: With a plethora of bloodthirsty monstrosities secretly preying on and sometimes coexisting with humankind, Cal and Niko will never be short of work in the City That Never Sleeps. But when they take a seemingly open-and-shut case involving the Kin (the "Mafia of the nonhuman world"), Cal and his sword-wielding brother become unwilling pawns in a power struggle between rival werewolf factions. The stakes are dramatically increased when Cal's girlfriend, the young seer Georgina, is kidnapped and held as collateral. The odds of Cal and his small group of misfit allies coming out of this unscathed are not good -- but 20-year-old Caliban Leandros is much more than even he realizes.

Magic Slays by Ilona Andrews

Magic Slays by Ilona Andrews (Kate Daniels #5)

Plagued by a war between magic and technology, Atlanta has never been so deadly. Good thing Kate Daniels is on the job.

Kate Daniels may have quit the Order of Merciful Aid, but she’s still knee-deep in paranormal problems. Or she would be if she could get someone to hire her. Starting her own business has been more challenging than she thought it would be—now that the Order is disparaging her good name, and many potential clients are afraid of getting on the bad side of the Beast Lord, who just happens to be Kate’s mate.

So when Atlanta’s premier Master of the Dead calls to ask for help with a vampire on the loose, Kate leaps at the chance of some paying work. Turns out this is not an isolated incident, and Kate needs to get to the bottom of it—fast, or the city and everyone dear to her might pay the ultimate price . . .

My precious! or random books waiting to be read

I have to say straight away: a lot of the things that bloggers do like In My Mailbox or On My Wishlist or Teaser Tueday, etc. I can't do because my working schedule is too haphazard, and I don't want to impose some sort of rigid scheme on my blogging (also, I'm a master-procrastinator, so if it's scheduled I'm bound to be late. I'd rather surprise myself with my awesomeness on a random day).

So today I'm showing the books waiting to be read on my bookshelves (just because).
* * *

So far I'm on Moonshine and Magic Slays.

Quotes which made me laugh..
"Why wouldn't he be ambidextrous?" Goodfellow muttered under his breath. "I am, the master of both hands in the art of war."
"I don't think that being able to jack off with either hand makes you an expert in anything." (Cal Leandros, Moonshine)
"You sure you don't need your Prince Charming to come and save you?" (Curran)
"Sure, do you have one handy?" (Kate)

Misfit by Jon Skovron (early review)

Misfit by Jon Skovron

received from Abrams through NetGalley

Jael Thompson has never really fit in. She’s changed schools too many times to count. The only family she’s ever known is her father, a bitter ex-priest who never lets her date and insists she attend the strictest Catholic school in Seattle. And her mother—well, she was a five thousand year old demon. That doesn’t exactly help.

But on her sixteenth birthday, her father gives her a present that brings about some unexpected changes. Some of the changes, like strange and wonderful powers and the cute skater boy with a knack for science, are awesome. But others, like the homicidal demon seeking revenge on her family? Not so much.

Steeped in mythology, this is an epic tale of a heroine who balances old world with new, science with magic, and the terrifying depths of the underworld with the ordinary halls of high school.

Gods & Monsters by Lyn Benedict

Gods & Monsters by Lyn Benedict (Shadows Inquiries #3)

When she finds the bodies of five women in the Florida Everglades, Sylvie believes them to be the work of a serial killer and passes the buck. Eternal Hearts by Jennifer Turner

Eternal Hearts by Jennifer Turner (A Darkness Within Series #2)

Drake's legendary heritage holds the key to Toni's survival and success, but will she be able to forgive his connection to the brutal night that robbed her of those she loved most? Will Drake be able to forget the betrayals in his past and risk taking one more chance? But most of all - can they find a way to reach each other in the darkness?

In case of zombie apocalypse

Hey, guys! I feel like I should say this just in case :)
If you'd like to sponsor a fellow book addict who sometimes can't sleep at night worrying that she won't have enough books to read if internet goes down in the event of zombie apocalypse (I'm convinced it's one of the top five ways to go for human race) you can donate through Paypal to olivesandacorns at gmail dot com or buy a book through any of the links provided with my reviews which will send me a small percentage from the sale. All proceeds will go towards my enormous TBR. I will also shelter you on the remote farm in Portugal when zombie apocalypse starts provided you survive getting there. There will be books, yay?
Thank you! Love you all
