Summary
A seven-year-old girl puts a nail gun to her grandmother's neck and fires. An isolated incident, say the experts. The experts are wrong. Across the world, children are killing their families. Is violence contagious? As chilling murders by children grip the country, anthropologist Hesketh Lock has his own mystery to solve: a bizarre scandal in the Taiwan timber industry.
Hesketh has never been good at relationships: Asperger's Syndrome has seen to that. But he does have a talent for spotting behavioral patterns and an outsider's fascination with group dynamics. Nothing obvious connects Hesketh's Asian case with the atrocities back home. Or with the increasingly odd behavior of his beloved stepson, Freddy. But when Hesketh's Taiwan contact dies shockingly and more acts of sabotage and child violence sweep the globe, he is forced to acknowledge possibilities that defy the rational principles on which he has staked his life, his career, and, most devastatingly of all, his role as a father.
Part psychological thriller, part dystopian nightmare, The Uninvited is a powerful and viscerally unsettling portrait of apocalypse in embryo.

Summary
It's one thing to learn
to curtsy properly. It's quite another to learn to curtsy and throw a
knife at the same time. Welcome to finishing school.
Fourteen-year-old Sophronia is the bane of her mother's existence. Sophronia is more interested in dismantling clocks and climbing trees than proper etiquette at tea--and god forbid anyone see her atrocious curtsy. Mrs. Temminnick is desperate for her daughter to become a proper lady. She enrolls Sophronia in Mademoiselle Geraldine's Finishing Academy for Young Ladies of Quality.
But little do Sophronia or her mother know that this is a school where ingenious young girls learn to finish, all right--but it's a different kind of finishing. Mademoiselle Geraldine's certainly trains young ladies in the finer arts of dance, dress, and etiquette, but also in the other kinds of finishing: the fine arts of death, diversion, deceit, espionage, and the modern weaponries. Sophronia and her friends are going to have a rousing first year at school.
First in a four book YA series set 25 years before the Parasol Protectorate but in the same universe.

Summary
Set in Edwardian London, The Friday Society follows the stories
of three very intelligent and talented young women, all of whom are
assistants to powerful men: Cora, lab assistant; Michiko, Japanese fight
assistant; and Nellie, magician's assistant. The three young women's
lives become inexorably intertwined after a chance meeting at a ball
that ends with the discovery of a murdered mystery man.
It's up to these three, in their own charming but bold way, to solve the murder—and the crimes they believe may be connected to it—without calling too much attention to themselves.
Told with Adrienne Kress's sharp wit and a great deal of irreverence, this Steampunk whodunit introduces three unforgettable and very ladylike— well, relatively ladylike—heroines poised for more dangerous adventures

OMG, I shouldn't even look at your post! I've been avoiding Netgalley & Edelweiss so avoid any temptation but now... I'll definitely have to check out a couple titles above! THANKS! LOL
ReplyDeleteThere's a reason I haven't signed up at Edelweiss ... too much temptation! Right now I'm once again trying to bring my NetGalley pile down to a minimum, then again, nine galleys aren't all too bad (and I have no physical review books lurking somewhere either). I'm a good reviewer! Just don't ask about all of my "normal" unread books ...
ReplyDeleteOh they're nice.. *runs away before the requests happen*
ReplyDeleteDo not do this to yourself!!
ReplyDeleteКакие красивые обложки встречаются. Особенно понравилась вторая. Даже руки сразу зачесались. А ведь это совсем не моя тема
ReplyDeleteI requested one of them and I have one at home. I understand your feeling I need to slow down, well not need, I must slow down.
ReplyDeleteOhh, I shouldn't look at this :p I've already so many books waiting for me. I'm trying to resist it, although I request The madness underneath a while ago. Can't wait to get accepted :p
ReplyDeleteooh you are so bad, dangling all of this eye candy. I requested the Uninvited!
ReplyDeletelove these posts, Karina! I've already requested a few of these but thanks for the heads up about the new Gail Carringer book on Edelweiss!
ReplyDeleteOk, so I'm all backed up here, but these do sound really good. I'm curious about Friday Society. Great list!
