Urban Fantasy Review: Dead Heat by Patricia Briggs

Dead Heat by Patricia Briggs (Alpha & Omega #4)

Egalley thanks to Ace

Synopsis from Goodreads
For once, mated werewolves Charles and Anna are not traveling because of Charles’s role as his father’s enforcer. This time, their trip to Arizona is purely personal, as Charles plans to buy Anna a horse for her birthday. Or at least it starts out that way...

Charles and Anna soon discover that a dangerous Fae being is on the loose, replacing human children with simulacrums. The Fae’s cold war with humanity is about to heat up—and Charles and Anna are in the cross fire.

God, I love this series! More than I love Mercy Thompson. And you know why? It feels structurally stronger, the story is tighter and emotionally more compact. Maybe I'm prejudiced because it reminds me of the glory days of early Kelley Armstrong with her Women of The Otherworld series. Who knows?

Charles & Anna have a wonderful and completely unique emotional connection which nobody else gets. They work as a perfect unit as humans and wolves because they already have been through so much. I also love how Anna might appear timid and young until she opens her mouth to put you in your place or blasts you with her super Omega powers, which is awesome! And Charles just loves watching her do it.*grins*

This time their story is very personal. Charles due to his status as a troubleshooter and executioner doesn't get attached to many people, but those who are closest to him he loves very deeply. He takes Anna to visit his old friend,  Joseph, -the son of local Alpha, but what he doesn't know is that Joseph has terminal cancer and refuses to become a werewolf to survive. Their reunion is bittersweet, and Joseph's character is heartfelt and endearing.

Then Alpha's family gets attacked by a nasty fae preying on children, and Charles & Anna offer their help to the local community. Their investigation is quick, tense, dangerous, and the results are horrifying, The ending is very emotional... I was holding back tears. However it just makes Dead Heat more beautiful and very strong.

Fantastic book, strongest in this series so far, highly recommended!

In case of zombie apocalypse

Hey, guys! I feel like I should say this just in case :)
If you'd like to sponsor a fellow book addict who sometimes can't sleep at night worrying that she won't have enough books to read if internet goes down in the event of zombie apocalypse (I'm convinced it's one of the top five ways to go for human race) you can donate through Paypal to olivesandacorns at gmail dot com or buy a book through any of the links provided with my reviews which will send me a small percentage from the sale. All proceeds will go towards my enormous TBR. I will also shelter you on the remote farm in Portugal when zombie apocalypse starts provided you survive getting there. There will be books, yay?
Thank you! Love you all
