Time Travel YA Fantasy Review: Changing Nature by April White

Changing Nature by April White (The Immortal Descendants #3)

review copy courtesy of the author

Synopsis from Goodreads
Immortal Descendants are disappearing and seventeen-year-old Clocker Saira Elian is next on the list…

Saira and Archer’s romantic London summer is shattered by the bold kidnappings of Immortal Descendants. It’s clear Mongers want control of the Descendant Families, and when they target a powerful Shifter, there’s no doubt they will eliminate anyone who stands in their way.

A split in time could be the cause of this new Monger aggression, and Saira, Archer and Ringo suspect their time-traveling nemesis Bishop Wilder. One dangerous world is exchanged for another when Saira and her friends track Wilder to the gloomy streets of Paris in 1429. They find the city besieged by marauding wolves led by a fanatical peasant girl who will be known to history as Joan of Arc.

Crossing the time stream to repair it has dropped them into the heart of the Hundred Years’ War on the eve of an epic battle, where the line between friends and enemies will be drawn in blood. To finally end the deadly game of cat and mouse with Wilder, Saira must confront her greatest challenge yet: the truth about her changing Nature.

Like all books by April White, Changing Nature rocked my socks. The closest comparison I can come up with for this paranormal fantasy is Deborah Harkness' trilogy,  although the witches here are replaced by Immortal Descendants with various talents.

Saira is a Clocker, a time traveller, and at just under 18-years of age she's already managed to stop Jack The Ripper in Victorian London and save Elizabeth Tudor from the executioner's axe - all in a pursuit of a villain bent on splitting the time stream for his own gain.

This time Saira, Archer and their friends have to travel into 15th century France during The Hundred Years' War, and I admit I was hooked straight away. I LOVE this time period, mostly due to my intense crush on Catherine series by Juliette Benzoni, which I read countless times in my teenage years, but it's also oh so....juicy! and Miss White depicted it really well.

Changing Nature is extremely well-paced, very intense and well-crafted. Saira is a fantastic heroine. She reminds me of Buffy Summers with her tenacity, levelheadedness and the ability to gather loyal supporters around her who will follow her into the fire. Despite her superpower (time travel) she is an ordinary tomboy with a knack for free running, and that only makes me admire her even more. Great story, awesome series, very much recommended.

In case of zombie apocalypse

Hey, guys! I feel like I should say this just in case :)
If you'd like to sponsor a fellow book addict who sometimes can't sleep at night worrying that she won't have enough books to read if internet goes down in the event of zombie apocalypse (I'm convinced it's one of the top five ways to go for human race) you can donate through Paypal to olivesandacorns at gmail dot com or buy a book through any of the links provided with my reviews which will send me a small percentage from the sale. All proceeds will go towards my enormous TBR. I will also shelter you on the remote farm in Portugal when zombie apocalypse starts provided you survive getting there. There will be books, yay?
Thank you! Love you all
