Urban Fantasy Review: Written in Red by Anne Bishop

Written in Red by Anne Bishop (The Others#1)

bought

Synopsis from Goodreads
No one creates realms like New York Times bestselling author Anne Bishop. Now in a thrilling new fantasy series, enter a world inhabited by the Others, unearthly entities—vampires and shape-shifters among them—who rule the Earth and whose prey are humans. As a cassandra sangue, or blood prophet, Meg Corbyn can see the future when her skin is cut—a gift that feels more like a curse. Meg’s Controller keeps her enslaved so he can have full access to her visions. But when she escapes, the only safe place Meg can hide is at the Lakeside Courtyard—a business district operated by the Others.

Shape-shifter Simon Wolfgard is reluctant to hire the stranger who inquires about the Human Liaison job. First, he senses she’s keeping a secret, and second, she doesn’t smell like human prey. Yet a stronger instinct propels him to give Meg the job. And when he learns the truth about Meg and that she’s wanted by the government, he’ll have to decide if she’s worth the fight between humans and the Others that will surely follow.

So, so good, peeps! What an absolutely fantastic read!

When all my blogger friends started dishing out five star reviews, I admit at the beginning I was skeptical, but then the sheer amount of good reviews changed my mind and I just caved in and read it myself.

From the first chapter it was clear, this was a great read. You know, in a way it reminded me of Ilona and Gordon Andrews' characters sheer charismatic goodness in Kate Daniels series that sucks you right in.

Both Ilona Andrews and Anne Bishop have that particular magical touch, with their banter between characters and their wonderful original world-building. So if you are a fan of one you will undoubtedly like the other.

Meg Corbyn is a dysfunctional blood prophet who just escaped her cage. Her prophecy showed her the way to escape her jailers and the way to survive at least for awhile, so she heads to The Courtyard  - a buffer zone between The Others and humans.

What The Others think of us, monkeys, can be summarized in this  quote:

“Vlad hated doing the paperwork as much as he did when a human employee quit, which was why they'd both made a promise not to eat quitters just to avoid the paperwork. As Tess had pointed out, eating the staff was bad for morale and made it so much harder to find new employees.”
And in a way it's a hilarious book in which two species do not get each other. The difference is that The Others own the land and have all the power while humans periodically forget who is the boss and get wiped out only to start causing trouble again.

There is also an issue of the main villain in Written in Red who wants to retrieve Meg as his escaped property. The Controller is truly horrendous as he is devoid of all feelings except greed and a never ending quest for power. There is also a very ominous feel to this book and a sense of urgency that makes you unable to put it down and gives you a guaranteed bookish hangover.

If you want more in depth reviews, please consult Goodreads, but all I can say is that this is one of the best books I've read this year and I wholly recommend it to all fans of urban fantasy!

In case of zombie apocalypse

Hey, guys! I feel like I should say this just in case :)
If you'd like to sponsor a fellow book addict who sometimes can't sleep at night worrying that she won't have enough books to read if internet goes down in the event of zombie apocalypse (I'm convinced it's one of the top five ways to go for human race) you can donate through Paypal to olivesandacorns at gmail dot com or buy a book through any of the links provided with my reviews which will send me a small percentage from the sale. All proceeds will go towards my enormous TBR. I will also shelter you on the remote farm in Portugal when zombie apocalypse starts provided you survive getting there. There will be books, yay?
Thank you! Love you all
