Urban Fantasy Review: Night Owls by Lauren M. Roy

Night Owls by Lauren M. Roy (Night Owls #1)

Egalley thanks to Ace

Synopsis from Goodreads
Night Owls book store is the one spot on campus open late enough to help out even the most practiced slacker. The employees’ penchant for fighting the evil creatures of the night is just a perk…

Valerie McTeague’s business model is simple: provide the students of Edgewood College with a late-night study haven and stay as far away from the underworld conflicts of her vampire brethren as possible. She’s lived that life, and the price she paid was far too high to ever want to return.

Elly Garrett hasn’t known any life except that of fighting the supernatural werewolf-like beings known as Creeps or Jackals. But she always had her mentor and foster father by her side—until he gave his life protecting a book that the Creeps desperately want to get their hands on.

When the book gets stashed at Night Owls for safe keeping, those Val holds nearest and dearest are put in mortal peril. Now Val and Elly will have to team up, along with a mismatched crew of humans, vampires, and lesbian succubi, to stop the Jackals from getting their claws on the book and unleashing unnamed horrors.

Oh man, this book could have been amazing! Instead it left me underwhelmed, slightly entertained and mostly bored.

What went wrong?

All the elements for a good urban fantasy were there: a book store owner/ex-hunter/vampire Val with a charming Renfield, Chaz, who is more like a friend than a servant; a young and trigger happy monster hunter Elly; her warlock friend Cavale and a couple of truly bad ass fighting succubi.

My problem is, - here are all these lovely characters which are not being utilised enough! Val's hunter history is hinted upon but there are no cool flashbacks and there are no certain habits to indicate that she is an ex-hunter. Her interactions with the vampire community of Boston are hardly there despite the mention of this whole back story of Chaz getting in a lot of trouble with them. Elly hardly has anything going for her despite all her training, and we only get to know her more through Cavale reminiscing about their mutual past. At last, succubi Lia and Sunny are seemingly Val's friends and they have these amazing daggers that they fight with but nothing is told us about them.

It was incredibly frustrating to feel like you were reading a second book in the series instead of the first where the author doesn't mention anything because the reader already knows the characters well.

The fights in general and the banter between Chaz and Val were nice, and I also enjoyed reading about Cavale's magic rituals...but I can't master enough enthusiasm to recommend this book to you and I'm truly sorry for that.

In case of zombie apocalypse

Hey, guys! I feel like I should say this just in case :)
If you'd like to sponsor a fellow book addict who sometimes can't sleep at night worrying that she won't have enough books to read if internet goes down in the event of zombie apocalypse (I'm convinced it's one of the top five ways to go for human race) you can donate through Paypal to olivesandacorns at gmail dot com or buy a book through any of the links provided with my reviews which will send me a small percentage from the sale. All proceeds will go towards my enormous TBR. I will also shelter you on the remote farm in Portugal when zombie apocalypse starts provided you survive getting there. There will be books, yay?
Thank you! Love you all
