Blood Will Tell, Pearl Savage and Ascent SHORT REVIEWS

Blood Will Tell by Samantha Young (Warriors of Ankh #1)

Synopsis from Goodreads
Eden is a Soul Eater. While that hasn’t meant much to her in the past, she’s pretty sure any minute now she’s going to go all "Carrie" on her eleventh grade class.

Noah is an Ankh. As an immortal Warrior, his purpose in life is to hunt down and kill Soul Eaters.

Eden is Noah’s next assignment. Problem is… this is an assignment with a difference. Eden’s not your average, run of the mill, Soul Eater. Noah’s job? To test Eden for possible redemption.

It’s a risky business.

Especially if Noah awakens Eden’s inner monster.

It would be kind of hard for Eden to listen to the angel on her shoulder when the devil on the other is telling her, her new best friend is a lying, scheming, immortal enemy...

....betrayal is such a bitch.

So is Eden when you get on her bad side.

Excellent writing, interesting mythology, much promise, but the characters have virtually no time to develop as the book is very short with an abrupt ending. I would certainly read more by this author, I just wished she didn't change the covers of this particular book so many times. I loved the boy on the cover, but now he's been replaced by a generic girl in a dress. Not cool.

Unfortunately I had too many problems with this book as in with its world-building and characters alike to actually enjoy it.

It seems to me this dystopia was a clash of too many ideas, which together created a great mess.

The world is separated into savages and so-called aristocratic society stuck in Victorian era under the protection of steam-powered domes. However in the centuries since the domes creation this society hasn't bothered to monitor changes of the outside world so it comes as a great surprise for them that it's actually now livable. What kind of disaster made the atmosphere dangerous for humans in the first place is not very clear.

The savages have a confusing tribal system, but they have a president (presidents?) and they are not really savages. There comes the line about their genetic modification, specific breed of warriors and special mates for them... Eh, too much.

Clara's willingness to go through abuse of her perpetually drunken mother and a potential abuse from her fiance didn't make sense to me as well. Her people were behind her, most of the aristocracy was behind her. The elimination of the queen who is incapable of ruling properly should have been in the works, maybe not by Clara herself, but by certain groups among the aristocracy. Clara's plot to just escape and hide wasn't going to work anyway.

Oh, well. I know a lot of people loved this book, but sadly it wasn't for me.

Ascent by Amy Kinzer (The Party Series #1)

Again the concept of time-travel is fascinating, and this book reads like a screenplay and reminds me of Quantum Leap. I could really see it as amazing TV series, but again it's way too short, and there is no information about a possible continuation of the series. Overall, thumbs up.

In case of zombie apocalypse

Hey, guys! I feel like I should say this just in case :)
If you'd like to sponsor a fellow book addict who sometimes can't sleep at night worrying that she won't have enough books to read if internet goes down in the event of zombie apocalypse (I'm convinced it's one of the top five ways to go for human race) you can donate through Paypal to olivesandacorns at gmail dot com or buy a book through any of the links provided with my reviews which will send me a small percentage from the sale. All proceeds will go towards my enormous TBR. I will also shelter you on the remote farm in Portugal when zombie apocalypse starts provided you survive getting there. There will be books, yay?
Thank you! Love you all
