I did not expect that from K.J. Charles, that's for sure! This is an adrenaline-fueled, gloriously action-packed thriller in the best tradition of Hardboiled, and you can be sure I was in heaven reading it!

NA Contemporary Romance Early Review: Heat by Penny Reid

Heat by Penny Reid (Elements of Chemistry #2)

Ecopy thanks to the author

Synopsis from Goodreads

Elements of Chemistry: HEAT is part 2 of a 3 part series (65k word novel) and ends in a cliffhanger.

**Blurb contains spoilers if you haven’t read Elements of Chemistry: ATTRACTION**
Four days left.
Private beach (…and boat).
Not so invisible girl.
And maybe less of a jerk-faced bully than originally thought.
What’s the worst (or the best) that could happen?

Kaitlyn is finding life outside of the science cabinet of obscurity to be quite illuminating …and so are her pants.
When things heat up between Kaitlyn Parker and Martin—previously known as the jerk-faced bully—Sandeke, she places her trust in the one person she never thought capable of earning it, let alone keeping it safe. Fortunately or unfortunately for Kaitlyn, where she gives her trust she can’t help but also give her heart.

But how will the world beyond the sanctuary of their newfound connection react to their relationship? Soon senators, chinless billionaires, and elements beyond Martin and Kaitlyn’s control want to weigh in on the young couple’s future.

Navigating the chaotic inferno of new love might be more than Kaitlyn bargained for, and much, much more than her trust—or her heart—can handle.

In my opinion, Heat was even better than Attraction. It's definitely getting angstier, the more Katy and Martin relationship progresses, and it's also more complex.

Urban Fantasy Review: Nice Dragons Finish Last by Rachel Aaron

Nice Dragons Finish Last by Rachel Aaron (Heartstrikers #1)

Synopsis from Goodreads
As the smallest dragon in the Heartstriker clan, Julius survives by a simple code: keep quiet, don’t cause trouble, and stay out of the way of bigger dragons. But this meek behavior doesn't fly in a family of ambitious magical predators, and his mother, Bethesda the Heartstriker, has finally reached the end of her patience.

Now, sealed in human form and banished to the DFZ--a vertical metropolis built on the ruins of Old Detroit--Julius has one month to prove that he can be a ruthless dragon or kiss his true shape goodbye forever. But in a city of modern mages and vengeful spirits where dragons are considered monsters to be exterminated, he’s going to need some serious help to survive this test.

He only hopes humans are more trustworthy than dragons...

“So far as I can tell, 'good dragon' is just another name for coldblooded sociopath," he said. "No friends, no trust, no love. Why would I ever want to live like that? It's not like any of you good dragons are happy.”

Julius is a bad dragon. He stays away from his family's brutal machinations, he is fast because he likes to run away while other dragons fight each other, and he is content to stay in his dungeon and play computer games all day long. All in all, he is adorable.

The Postman Knock #120

Hello, peeps!
How is things with you?
I am knackered again. We've been working on making the barn into a habitable bedroom, and I did couple of days of pointing the stone walls with cement. Love the job, especially with an audiobook in my ear, but I am tired. Add to this taking up cycling again... You can draw the picture yourself :)))

MASTER OF THE OPERA #1 was a very, very short read. to be honest I will need to read more to form any sort of an opinion... RELUCTANT CONCUBINE was not as good as everyone is saying. Nice barbarian vibe, but I wasn't convinced by the main couple love for each other and by the mistakes they made. TURN COAT was good and CHANGES was awesome! What a fantastic installment!!! THE SHATTERED COURT was nice, but felt like an introduction to the series, not a full book. At last, WILL GRAYSON, WILL GRAYSON was totally crazy but lovely at the end. I was out of my comfort zone, but it was an interesting experience.

I would read anything Sherry writes, so I jumped to request this one!

I am gutted that Ghost Story isn't narrated by Marsters!!! It's so hard to listen, and it's a loooong book.
I also splashed out on something I wanted to read for ages...

What can I say? Dragons make me happy.

Congrats to Zainab for winning a copy of Deception, and thanks to everyone who participated!

Friday Mini Reviews #40: Jacqueline Carey, Jim Butcher & Sherry Thomas

Kushiel's Mercy by Jacqueline Carey (Imriel's Trilogy #3)

Synopsis from Goodreads
Having learned a lesson about thwarting the will of the gods, Imriel and Sidonie publicly confess their affair, only to see the country boil over in turmoil. Younger generations, infatuated by their heart-twisting, star-cross romance, defend the couple. Many others cannot forget the betrayals of Imriel's mother, Melisande, who plunged their country into a bloody war that cost the lives of their fathers, brothers, and sons.

To quell the unrest, Ysandre, the queen, sets her decree. She will not divide the lovers, yet neither will she acknowledge them. If they marry, Sidonie will be disinherited, losing her claim on the throne.

There's only one way they can truly be together. Imriel must perform an act of faith: search the world for his infamous mother and bring her back to Terre d'Ange to be executed for treason.

Facing a terrible choice, Imriel and Sidonie prepare ruefully for another long separation. But when a dark foreign force casts a shadow over Terre d'Ange and all the surrounding countries, their world is turned upside down, alliances of the unlikeliest kind are made, and Imriel and Sidonie learn that the god Elua always puts hearts together apurpose.

Amazon US/UK | Amazon kindle US/UK | The Book Depository

My favourite book in this series, this was an amazing story! Oh Miss Carey, sometimes the scope of your imagination makes me dissolve into a teary eyed, babbling creature. When Imriel had to go to a faraway land to make Sidonie fall in love with him all over again in a different skin with no memory of her ties to him due to an evil enchantment, that was... truly EPIC! Hugely recommended series! What a couple...
* * *

Death Masks by Jim Butcher (The Dresden Files #5)

Synopsis from Goodreads

Harry Dresden, Chicago's only practicing professional wizard, should be happy that business is pretty good for a change. But now he's getting more than he bargained for:

A duel with the Red Court of Vampires' champion, who must kill Harry to end the war between vampires and wizards...

Professional hit men using Harry for target practice...

The missing Shroud of Turin...

A handless and headless corpse the Chicago police need identified...

Not to mention the return of Harry's ex-girlfriend Susan, who's still struggling with her semi-vampiric nature. And who seems to have a new man in her life.

Some days, it just doesn't pay to get out of bed. No matter how much you're charging.

Amazon US/UK | Amazon kindle US/UK | The Book Depository
One of the stronger books in this series in my opinion. I really enjoyed having Susan back, and that love scene was gorgeous and heartbreaking. Of course, Death Masks also introduces us to one of my favourite villains, Nicodimus.*shivers* Fabulous, read it!
* * *

My Beautiful Enemy by Sherry Thomas (The Heart of Blade Duology #2)

Synopsis from Goodreads
In this spellbinding romance by the acclaimed author of The Luckiest Lady in London, a beautiful and cunning woman meets her match in a man just as dangerous and seductive as she is, putting both her heart and her future at risk…

Despite the scars Catherine left him, Captain Leighton Atwood has never been able to forget the mysterious girl who once so thoroughly captivated him. When she unexpectedly reappears in his life, he refuses to get close to her. But he cannot deny the yearning she reignites in his heart.

Their reunion, however, plunges them into a web of espionage, treachery, and deadly foes. With everything at stake, Leighton and Catherine are forced to work together to find a way out. If they are ever to find safety and happiness, they must first forgive and learn to trust each other again…

Amazon US/UK | Amazon kindle US/UK | The Book Depository
O_o! Atwood and Ying-Ying are back, and they are all grown up and very dangerous! Such a delicious story, full of spies, political intrigues and serious heartbreak. Reminded me a bit of Mr and Mrs. Smith, the main characters are so capable and confident. Throughout the story which involves quite a few years and couple of continents it's Atwood who is more vulnerable and desperate to find his love, and Catherine who is reticent and stoic. Really, really loved it, and recommend it to almost anyone but the most cynical reader.
* * *

Fantasy Romance Review: The Mark of The Tala by Jeffe Kennedy

The Mark of The Tala by Jeffe Kennedy (The Twelve Kingdoms #1)

Synopsis from Goodreads

Queen Of The Unknown

The tales tell of three sisters, daughters of the high king. The eldest, a valiant warrior-woman, heir to the kingdom. The youngest, the sweet beauty with her Prince Charming. No one says much about the middle princess, Andromeda. Andi, the other one.

Andi doesn't mind being invisible. She enjoys the company of her horse more than court, and she has a way of blending into the shadows. Until the day she meets a strange man riding, who keeps company with wolves and ravens, who rules a land of shapeshifters and demons. A country she'd thought was no more than legend--until he claims her as its queen.

In a moment everything changes: Her father, the wise king, becomes a warlord, suspicious and strategic. Whispers call her dead mother a traitor and a witch. Andi doesn't know if her own instincts can be trusted, as visions appear to her and her body begins to rebel.

For Andi, the time to learn her true nature has come. . .

Release date: May 5th 2015.
Amazon US/UK | Amazon kindle US/UK | The Book Depository

To be honest, what started promising, went downhill really fast. Too much unnecessary angst, anachronistic for the historical era, unconvincing main characters and the mention of FSoG on the cover will only harm this book in comparison. They have nothing in common. Unfortunately, not recommended.
* * *

Kushiel's Justice by Jacqueline Carey (Impriel's Trilogy #2)

Synopsis from Goodreads

This heroic fantasy novel continues the trilogy begun in Kushiel's Scion, extending Jacqueline Carey's grand Kushiel series to five volumes. At the onset, protagonist Imriel de la Courcel is caught between duty and desire. His passion for his beautiful cousin Sidonie has propelled him into a dangerous affair with her, but he knows that as the prince of Terre d'Ange, he is bound to wed princess Dorelei of Alba. With a sorrowful heart, he journeys with his new mate to her homeland. But danger, not solace, awaits him there: Political intrigue makes him a target. In a savage attack, he loses not only his wife, but only his infant heir. As the scion of Kushiel, he must seek revenge. A distinctive authorial voice.
Amazon US/UK | Amazon kindle US/UK | The Book Depository

This series continues to be amazing! Imriel who is secretly in love with Sidonie, marries a princess of Alba and loses her due to a terrible prophecy. Now he needs to travel to faraway lands of Wralia (prototype of Russian Empire) to avenge his wife and come back to his beloved. This book is tragic, epic and philosophical. I absolutely loved listening to it on audio, and since then bought and read the rest of the series as audiobooks as well. Hugely recommended.
* * *

Summer Knight by Jim Butcher (The Dresden Files #4)

Synopsis from Goodreads

Lost items found. Paranormal Investigations. Consulting. Advice. Reasonable Rates.
No Love Potions, Endless Purses, or Other Entertainment

She has an offer Harry can't refuse if he wants to free himself of the supernatural hold his faerie godmother has over him--and hopefully end his run of bad luck. All he has to do is find out who murdered the Summer Queen's right-hand man, the Summer Knight, and clear the Winter Queen's name.

It seems simple enough, but Harry knows better than to get caught in the middle of faerie politics. Until he finds out that the fate of the entire world rests on his solving this case. No pressure or anything...
Amazon US/UK | Amazon kindle US/UK | The Book Depository

James Marsters continues to astonish me with his sexy, sarcastic as hell, voice over of Harry Dresden. Listening to this book was like eating my favorite candy, - I couldn't get enough. Even if previous book struck me as more dramatic, stronger installment, I still enjoyed the heck out of this one. Off to the next one. Another fabulous audiobook!
* * *

An Interview with D.B. Reynolds Plus an International Giveaway of Deception!

David Gandy who would have been a perfect impersonation of Raphael
Hi, Donna! And thank you very much for stopping by. First of all, for those of the readers unfamiliar with your Vampires in America, how would you describe your series in one sentence?

Thanks for having me, Karina. I'm excited about sharing Deception with readers. My series in one sentence ...

Eight of the most powerful vampires on earth--violent, bloody and aggressive--rule all of North America with their beautiful and kickass mates fighting by their sides.

And what kind of reader would enjoy your books?

Anyone who believes sex and romance can only add to a story, who enjoys a dose of suspense and intrigue along the way, and who loves gorgeous vampires who revel in the power and seduction of their vampire blood. There are no self-hating vampires here.

Raphael and Cyn are my absolute favourite couple in this series, and Deception brought them back to us (yay!). What made you come back to them as main characters so far along in the series?

I wanted something fresh for the series. All through the first eight books, Raphael has been gathering allies and manipulating events to make sure he has people he can work with and trust. The next logical step was to present a challenge that tested their historic alliance and forced them to work together, which is the European invasion. Naturally, the Europeans started by trying to eliminate Raphael, since he's the greatest threat to their success, and so the first book of the new story arc was Cyn and Raphael. In subsequent books, we'll meet new characters, but we'll also revisit the other vampire lords and their mates. This is fun for me, and I hope for my readers, since we get to see how they're getting along after that first, hot rush of love.

I feel like Deception is a game changer for the series. Can you give us a hint what's coming next for Vampires In America?

It's definitely a new direction for the series. In the next several books, we'll visit all of the North American Vampire Lords as they fight off challenges to their territories, some of the challenges will be outright wars, while others will try subterfuge and killing from the shadows. I've mapped out the territories and who will back up whom, just as Lucas does for Raphael in Deception, along with a general sense of story, but I don't have the details on all of them yet. The next book is set, however, since I'm writing it now. It's called Alliance, and will introduce a new and powerful Vampire Lord for the South.

At last, what is your absolute favourite book or couple you yourself have ever written and why?

This is so difficult, because I love all of my vampires and their mates. But I'd have to say that as a couple, it's Raphael and Cyn, because I'm a romantic at heart, and I love the way they love each other

Thank you so much for answering my questions, Donna! I am looking forward to the next book in the series already!

D. B. Reynolds is the RT Award-Winning author of the popular Vampires in America series of Paranormal Romance/Urban Fantasy and an Emmy-nominated television sound editor. She lives with her husband of many years in a flammable canyon near Los Angeles, and when she’s not writing her own books, she can usually be found reading someone else’s.

Find D.B. Reynolds:

Kauai, Hawaii—tropical paradise, vibrant jungle, turquoise sea... and sensuous nights that hide vampires so powerful they can change the world.

Raphael—powerful, extraordinary, arrogant. He’s been eliminating rivals and gathering allies, determined not just to survive, but to demolish the Europeans who think they can steal what he’s worked for centuries to create. In a final bid to avert a war that seems inevitable, Raphael agrees to meet an enemy he knows of old. She is formidable, wily, and not to be trusted. But in his arrogance, Raphael believes he can foil whatever treachery she has brewing.

Cynthia Leighton—Raphael’s human mate, beautiful, smart, and deadly when threatened. She doesn’t trust anyone, much less a powerful vampire claiming to want peace. So while Raphael prepares to negotiate a treaty, Cyn is preparing for the inevitable double-cross that she knows is coming. Raphael worries about saving thousands of vampire lives. She only cares about one, and she will do anything to keep him alive and in her arms.

When Cyn is proven right, when it all falls apart and Raphael’s enemies draw on ancient magic to trap him, taking him away from Cyn and out of the war, it all falls to her—to find Raphael, to save the thousands of vampires who will die if she doesn’t succeed... and to kill every single being, human or vampire, who gets in her way.

Elements of Chemistry is perhaps Penny's geekiest romance, and I'm loving every moment of it.

The Postman Knock #118

Hello and Happy Easter, everyone! I haven't had much to post bookwise last week, so I skipped the post on Sunday, however this week was awesome. First of all, we've got a dog! Mishka was lost or abandoned, and my friend picked her up from the street knowing that we've been looking for a dog for some time. She is a very young pup and absolutely adorbs.

And of course I spent all day yesterday making my Orthodox Easter cakes even if in Russian calendar it's celebrated a week later. Oh well. First time I made something so complicated in a bread oven, and it wasn't half bad. I also used natural dye for the eggs. Pretty, aren't they?

I've already said why CAPTIVE PRINCE & PRINCE'S GAMBIT were mind blowing read here. WHITE NIGHT & SMALL FAVOUR proved again that Harry Dresden rocks on audio, and WOLF BRIDE started promising, and ended up being a very disappointing read. Oh well...

This is it for me, hope you have a wonderful weekend! Hugs xxx
