Urban Fantasy Review: Sapphire Flames by Ilona Andrews

Sapphire Flames by Ilona Andrews (Hidden Legacy #4)

Synopsis from Goodreads
From #1 New York Times bestselling author Ilona Andrews comes an enthralling new trilogy set in the Hidden Legacy world, where magic means power, and family bloodlines are the new currency of society…

In a world where magic is the key to power and wealth, Catalina Baylor is a Prime, the highest rank of magic user, and the Head of her House. Catalina has always been afraid to use her unique powers, but when her friend’s mother and sister are murdered, Catalina risks her reputation and safety to unravel the mystery.

But behind the scenes powerful forces are at work, and one of them is Alessandro Sagredo, the Italian Prime who was once Catalina’s teenage crush. Dangerous and unpredictable, Alessandro’s true motives are unclear, but he’s drawn to Catalina like a moth to a flame.

To help her friend, Catalina must test the limits of her extraordinary powers, but doing so may cost her both her House–and her heart.

You know what happened to me after finishing Sapphire Flames, folks? Like any other self-respecting fan of Ilona Andrews, I went back and re-read the whole series! Tell me, you somehow had the willpower not to do the same? *grinning*

What I've noticed is that Catalina is much more flexible than Nevada. Nevada is like a tank and in that regard suits Rogan very well. Catalina is more subversive and soft, although no less deadly. Many times she is so scared and panicky, but still willing to battle through it and act, and she is just coming into her own strength. I found her fascinating and full of hidden angles.

The plot in all its complexity kept me guessing about its main conspiracy, and I generally was very happy with Baylor House development. However, I did not find the instalove between Alessandro and Catalina very convincing for two reasons.

First of all, he does not open up in this book at all, serving more like a prop to Catalina's use of power. Secondly, she might be his fan, but she doesn't know or understands him enough to fall in love with him that fast. I felt like I was missing a few scenes.

Otherwise, this was a delicious read, and a sure future re-read, peeps. If you are unfamiliar with Ilona Andrews and this series, in particular, start with Burn For Me. Much recommended.

In case of zombie apocalypse

Hey, guys! I feel like I should say this just in case :)
If you'd like to sponsor a fellow book addict who sometimes can't sleep at night worrying that she won't have enough books to read if internet goes down in the event of zombie apocalypse (I'm convinced it's one of the top five ways to go for human race) you can donate through Paypal to olivesandacorns at gmail dot com or buy a book through any of the links provided with my reviews which will send me a small percentage from the sale. All proceeds will go towards my enormous TBR. I will also shelter you on the remote farm in Portugal when zombie apocalypse starts provided you survive getting there. There will be books, yay?
Thank you! Love you all
