God, this book was exquisite! Not for everyone, but I'm reading and watching a lot about Chinese mythology and culture these days, and the more you do the more you understand the nuances.

The synopsis does not do this book justice. To The Sky Kingdom is all about predestination and love which keeps finding you through time and space, it also has some kickass battle sequences and fantastic characters, but it's all done in a non-obtrusive and very elegant way.

Bai Qian is a 150 thousand year-old Goddess, who due being jilted eons ago when her groom ran away with her servant, got engaged to a baby Immortal half her age(!), a very talented Yeh Hua, The Sky Emperor's heir. They managed to avoid each other for thousands of years, knowing it will be nothing more than a political marriage while both parties rise to power.

However 300 years ago Bai Qian underwent a major calamity, a necessary process to become a Goddess. What she doesn't remember is that she was turned Mortal, met Yeh Hua, they both fell madly in love, and he married her and took her to live with him in The Sky Kingdom where she gave birth to a son and through machinations of his concubine suffered greatly and died. Only to remember who she really is and drink an elixir to forget her mortal life. Convoluting or what?

The book starts with Bai Qian's last days as mortal, which is pretty confusing. When she accidentally meets Yeh Hua again, it gets even more confusing, as in her he recognizes his beloved Su Su and his son keeps calling Bai Qian mother.... So, not only they already have a son, Bai Qian is supposed to marry Yeh Hua despite being twice his age, and she doesn't remember him at all.

So he has to woo her all over again.

There are other plot threads. Bai Qian's past is slowly revealed, her dedication to her Master, her enemies and past love stories, her friends and family who try to support her. There is a lot going on.

But the sweetest part is Bai Qian's and Yeh Hua interactions. She is clueless and slowly falls in love all over again, and he is tortured by his fear that she will remember how he wronged her.

I read it with my heart in my throat from time to time, and the ending while satisfying was too short, and damn I wanted more! To The Sky Kingdom might not be for anyone, but I absolutely loved it, and recommend it without any hesitation.

In case of zombie apocalypse

Hey, guys! I feel like I should say this just in case :)
If you'd like to sponsor a fellow book addict who sometimes can't sleep at night worrying that she won't have enough books to read if internet goes down in the event of zombie apocalypse (I'm convinced it's one of the top five ways to go for human race) you can donate through Paypal to olivesandacorns at gmail dot com or buy a book through any of the links provided with my reviews which will send me a small percentage from the sale. All proceeds will go towards my enormous TBR. I will also shelter you on the remote farm in Portugal when zombie apocalypse starts provided you survive getting there. There will be books, yay?
Thank you! Love you all
