Friday Mini Reviews #68: Jean Johnson, Tamsen Parker & J.D. Robb

The V'Dan by Jean Johnson (The First Salik War #2)

bought

Synopsis from Goodreads
A thrilling new perspective of the world created in the explosive, national bestselling Theirs Not to Reason Why series. It’s two hundred years earlier—the age of the First Salik War. And the battle against humanity has been engaged.

The V’Dan always believed they were the chosen race, destined to make a mark on the galaxy. For the last few centuries, they interacted peacefully with other sentient species—save for the Salik. Cold, amphibious, and vicious, the Salik were set on one goal: to conquer every race within their grasp.

Now that the Salik’s ruthless war has begun, the fate of the galaxy is in the hands of two strange companions: Li’eth, a prince under siege and his rescuer, Jacaranda MacKenzie. A beautiful ambassador from the Motherworld, Jackie possesses more than the holy powers of a goddess. She brings a secret weapon—a strange, wondrous, and dangerous new technology that could be her and Li’eth’s last and only hope to save their people from extinction...

Basically reiteration is the bane of this whole book, and anything worth happening happens in the last 10% of it. This writing style of going through of what is being said over and over again drove me up the wall. Which is why it took me that long to read it. Disappointed. However, I'll still read Blockade as I like Li'eth. *sigh* I've got a headache now.

Craving Flight by Tamsen Parker (Bound by Ink)

Synopsis from Goodreads

Tzipporah Berger is thirty-seven and single, which is practically unheard of in the Orthodox Jewish community she now calls home. Her increasing religiosity and need for kink may have broken up her first marriage, but she’s decided it’s time to try again. And the rabbi’s wife has just the man in mind.

Elan Klein is the neighborhood butcher whose intimidating size and gruff manner hint at a deliciously forceful personality. But BDSM isn’t exactly something you discuss during an Orthodox courtship. Will a marriage to Elan solidify her place in the community that she loves and provide the domination and pain Tzipporah craves or will she forever have to rely on flights of fancy to satisfy her needs?

Craving Flight is a novella written for the Goodreads BDSM Group's Bring Out Your Kink writing event. Members provided a photo and letter to inspire writers to create an original story and writers picked the prompt that spoke to them most. It will be available exclusively to BDSM Group Members on September 7th and to the general public on September 21st. And best of all? It will be free! Join the BDSM group now to see the prompt that inspired the story (prompt 16)!

Really a fantastic new erotic romance author for me. This novella had a fairytalish quality to me, it was beautifully written and touching. Go try it for yourself, it's free on Amazon. As soon as I finish with my current urgent reads I'm buying Personal Geography from this author. There was a snippet of it in the end of Craving Flight, and I am dying to know more. Very much recommended!

Remember When by J.D. Robb (In Death #17.5)

bought

Synopsis from Goodreads
Laine Tavish is an ordinary woman living an ordinary life in the small town of Angel's Gap, Maryland, as the proprietor of Remember When, an antique treasures and gift shop. At least, that's what everyone in Angel's Gap thinks. They have no idea that she used to be Elaine O'Hara, daughter of the notorious con man Big Jack O'Hara. Or that she grew up moving from place to place, one step ahead of the law . . .
Laine's past has just caught up with her, though-in a very dramatic way. Her long-lost uncle suddenly turned up in her shop, leaving only a cryptic warning before dying in the street, run down by a car. Soon afterward, her home is ransacked. Now it's up to Laine, and a sexy stranger named Max Gannon, to find out who's chasing her, and why.
The answer lies in a hidden fortune-a fortune that will change not only Laine's life but also the lives of future generations. And danger and death will surround that fortune for years to come. Until New York City detective Lieutenant Eve Dallas gets on the case.
A thrill-ride of a novel that blends present-day romance and futuristic suspense, "Remember When" is a tale of deceit and secrets, of strong women and fascinating men-a brilliant combination of the incomparable talents of the two sides of Nora Roberts.

7/10

I'm kind of split between the first half which was a bit long and dull-ish but with a kick butt heroine in our  present time, and second part with Eve, which was super short in comparison (or seemed short to me?). The villain was a total weasel of the type I really can not stand, but the ending was very satisfying and sweet.
It was an okay read.
