Friday Mini-Reviews #66: Mary Robinette Kowal, C.D. Reiss & J.D. Robb
Glamour in Glass by Mary Robinette Kowal (Glamourist Histories #2)

Synopsis from Goodreads
Mary Robinette Kowal stunned readers with her charming first novel
Shades of Milk and Honey
, a loving tribute to the works of Jane Austen in a world where
magic is an everyday occurrence. This magic comes in the form of
glamour, which allows talented users to form practically any illusion
they can imagine. Shades debuted to great acclaim and left readers eagerly awaiting its sequel. Glamour in Glass
continues following the lives of beloved main characters Jane and
Vincent, with a much deeper vein of drama and intrigue. In the tumultuous
months after Napoleon abdicates his throne, Jane and Vincent go to
Belgium for their honeymoon. While there, the deposed emperor escapes
his exile in Elba, throwing the continent into turmoil. With no easy way
back to England, Jane and Vincent’s concerns turn from enjoying their
honeymoon...to escaping it. Left with no outward salvation, Jane must
persevere over her trying personal circumstances and use her glamour to
rescue her husband from prison...and hopefully prevent her newly built
marriage from getting stranded on the shoals of another country's war.
8/10
This was unexpectedly dramatic and emotional book. Jane truly came out of her shell for the sake of her husband, and kicked some major butt in the process. I was proud of her ingenious ideas. As for Vincent, all his troubles could have been avoided if he trusted his wife from the beginning! Great book.

Synopsis from Goodreads
Everything about Fiona
Drazen is forbidden. She’s a party girl with dark desires. She’s
beautiful, irresponsible, irresistible. She’s my patient. I’m her
therapist. I’m past past wanting her. Past possessing her. Past bedding
her or protecting her. I’m willing to be self-destructive, negligent,
brave, audacious, and stronger than I ever believed possible. She’s
blunt force trauma to the heart. And she calls another man Master.
8/10
As usual with C.D. Reiss this is a very unorthodox book with an unorthodox ending. Fiona is an extremely complex character, and in the end it's not Deacon or Elliot who save her. It's her on her own who has to heal herself. I loved that ending, I loved how peaceful it made me feel in the end. Also there are some quotes to die for in here, just beautiful!

Как обычно с С.Д.

Synopsis from Goodreads
After a tip from a
reporter, Eve Dallas finds the body of a young woman in a Delancey
street dumpster. Just hours before, the news station had mysteriously
received a portfolio of professional portraits of the woman. The photos
seemed to be nothing out of the ordinary for any pretty young woman
starting a modeling career. Except that she wasn't a model. And that
these photos were taken after she had been murdered. Now Dallas is on
the trail of a killer who's a perfectionist and an artist. He carefully
observes and records his victim's every move. And he has a mission: to
own every beautiful young woman's innocence, to capture her youth and
vitality—in one fateful shot...
8/10
This is a heartbreaking book for Roarke as he finds out a very important fact from his past, something which makes him rethink the foundation he built himself on. It's emotionally taxing and it's another important milestone in his relationship with Eve as he has to learn to open up about his troubles to her this time, not the other way round. Fabulous book as usual.
