YA Fantasy Review: Heir of Fire by Sarah J. Maas

Heir of Fire by Sarah J. Maas (Throne of Glass #3)

Egalley thanks to Bloomsbury Children

Synopsis from Goodreads
Lost and broken, Celaena Sardothien’s only thought is to avenge the savage death of her dearest friend: as the King of Adarlan’s Assassin, she is bound to serve this tyrant, but he will pay for what he did. Any hope Celaena has of destroying the king lies in answers to be found in Wendlyn. Sacrificing his future, Chaol, the Captain of the King’s Guard, has sent Celaena there to protect her, but her darkest demons lay in that same place. If she can overcome them, she will be Adarlan’s biggest threat – and his own toughest enemy.

While Celaena learns of her true destiny, and the eyes of Erilea are on Wendlyn, a brutal and beastly force is preparing to take to the skies. Will Celaena find the strength not only to win her own battles, but to fight a war that could pit her loyalties to her own people against those she has grown to love?

This third novel in the Throne of Glass sequence, from New York Times bestselling author Sarah J. Maas, is packed with more heart-stopping action, devastating drama and swoonsome romance, and introduces some fierce new heroines to love and hate.

Ah, ladies and gents... What a book! There is this off the charts epicness here, there is sweat, blood and tears... Sarah J. Maas poured all her soul into it, and it's absolutely freaking amazing!

“She had lied to him. She had wanted to save lives, yes. But she had gone out there with no intention of saving her own.

The book is split between few main characters, and they all have their own chapters which is very common in fantasy. There are Dorian, Chaol and another couple of characters back in Adarlan dealing with rebels, magic and trying to figure out how to get rid of the king.

There is an iron witch, Manon, with her absolutely adorable wyvern, Abraxos. Oh, I loved her chapters! She is refreshingly new, shiny and feral, and among the cruelty and ruthlessness of iron witches clans getting ready for war, she is slowly discovering that she has a heart. We don't know yet what role she will play in the future, but so far she is not connected to other main characters in the book.

At last, there is Celaena in Wendlyn. And there is Rowan. Oh God, there is Rowan! *grinning*

Celaena comes to Wendlyn with a vague goal to find Maeve and ask her about wyrdkeys. She is emotionally devastated, hollow, full of rage and despair. She is a pale shadow of the cocky, mischievous girl we got to know in the first two books and in all the novellas. Maeve agrees to answer her questions but only if Celaena shows that she deserves them, and only Rowan, a Fae prince in Maeve service will determine when that is going to happen.

Ladies, you remember Barrons and his gang in Fever series? Yep, Rowan reminded me of them. Fierce, mysterious, a man of very few words, he is like a stone wall at which Celaena smashes herself over and over again.

Their lessons and their discovery of what and whom Celaena truly is are fabulous! It was the most precious, delicious part of the book, and I loved every moment of their journey.

There is a gravity to this book, a quiet sense of a huge storm brewing, there are small acts of defiance against Adarlan's horrendous tyranny and there is a lot of grief and loss, and heartbreak. So, fortify yourself.

Again, it's an amazing read, and it turned out to be a wonderful fantasy series. Very much recommended.

In case of zombie apocalypse

Hey, guys! I feel like I should say this just in case :)
If you'd like to sponsor a fellow book addict who sometimes can't sleep at night worrying that she won't have enough books to read if internet goes down in the event of zombie apocalypse (I'm convinced it's one of the top five ways to go for human race) you can donate through Paypal to olivesandacorns at gmail dot com or buy a book through any of the links provided with my reviews which will send me a small percentage from the sale. All proceeds will go towards my enormous TBR. I will also shelter you on the remote farm in Portugal when zombie apocalypse starts provided you survive getting there. There will be books, yay?
Thank you! Love you all
