Urban Fantasy Early Review: Smoke Bitten by Patricia Briggs

Smoke Bitten by Patricia Briggs (Mercy Thompson #12)

advanced reader copy courtesy of Ace

Synopsis from Goodreads
Mercy Thompson, car mechanic and shapeshifter, faces a threat unlike any other in this thrilling entry in the #1 New York Times bestselling series.

I am Mercedes Athena Thompson Hauptman.
My only “superpowers” are that I turn into a thirty-five pound coyote and fix Volkswagens. But I have friends in odd places and a pack of werewolves at my back. It looks like I’m going to need them.

Centuries ago, the fae dwelt in Underhill–until she locked her doors against them. They left behind their great castles and troves of magical artifacts. They abandoned their prisoners and their pets. Without the fae to mind them, those creatures who remained behind roamed freely through Underhill wreaking havoc. Only the deadliest survived.

Now one of those prisoners has escaped. It can look like anyone, any creature it chooses. But if it bites you, it controls you. It lives for chaos and destruction. It can make you do anything–even kill the person you love the most. Now it is here, in the Tri-Cities. In my territory.

It won’t, can’t, remain.

Not if I have anything to say about it.

Release Date: March 17th, 2020.

As much as I couldn't get into the previous Mercy's book on audio, I feared I lost my interest in this series. Never fear! Now I'm thinking it was just the audio format itself that I didn't like because Smoke Bitten was superb!

I devoured this book, everything in it was perfect. Two reasons.

First, the main adversaries are fae, and I personally think that when Patricia Briggs writes about fae, she is at her finest. They are so other, primal and are steeped in mythology, that to me Mercy clicks with them the most, it's like Coyote takes over and speaks through her.

At one time the fae asks Mercy: "What are you?"
And she replies: "Chaos".

The second reason is that the author created a rift between Adam and Mercy, who are until now have been an exemplary couple. Conflict is good and conflict makes relationships grow. I absolutely loved what they both went through. It reminded me how fragile and momentary happiness is, and that we can't take anything for granted. The lesson here was also very important: do not give up, communicate, if something doesn't work, try a different approach. Mercy is practical to the core, and this character trait I find incredibly endearing. Even her angst, what little of it there is, is about baking cookies when she feels low!

The pace increases steadily, and there are very little breaks between the action. Because of that, you fly through this book to a very satisfying ending. I personally couldn't be happier, and recommend you to buy or borrow this instalment and dive right in as soon as it's out. You will not be disappointed.

In case of zombie apocalypse

Hey, guys! I feel like I should say this just in case :)
If you'd like to sponsor a fellow book addict who sometimes can't sleep at night worrying that she won't have enough books to read if internet goes down in the event of zombie apocalypse (I'm convinced it's one of the top five ways to go for human race) you can donate through Paypal to olivesandacorns at gmail dot com or buy a book through any of the links provided with my reviews which will send me a small percentage from the sale. All proceeds will go towards my enormous TBR. I will also shelter you on the remote farm in Portugal when zombie apocalypse starts provided you survive getting there. There will be books, yay?
Thank you! Love you all
