Romantic Comedy Review: Level Up by Cathy Yardley

Level Up by Cathy Yardley (Fandom Hearts #1)

ecopy from the author

Synopsis from Goodreads
Geeky introvert Tessa Rodriguez will do whatever it takes to get promoted to video game engineer– including create a fandom-based video game in just three weeks. The only problem is, she can't do it alone. Now, she needs to strong-arm, cajole, and otherwise socialize with her video game coworkers, especially her roommate, Adam, who’s always been strictly business with her. The more they work together, though, the closer they get…

Adam London has always thought of his roomie Tessa as “one of the guys” until he agreed to help her with this crazy project. Now, he’s thinking of her all the time… and certainly as something more than just a roommate! But his last girlfriend broke up with him to follow her ambitions, and he knows that Tessa is obsessed with getting ahead in the video game world.

Going from friends to something more is one hell of a challenge. Can Tessa and Adam level up their relationship to love?

Fun, easy, upbeat series with the right amount of geeky humour to suit the fans of The Big Bang Theory with a dash of  New Girl. I blitzed through three books I had and would have happily munched on more.

This is classic friends to lovers trope, where two people actually already like each other but don't realise it until something happens to make them see one another in a new light.

Tessa thinks she is good enough to receive a promotion at work, but because she isn't part of the "in-crowd", no one will give it to her. So, the hermit decides to up her social skills, starting from Adam, ends up finding awesome new friends along the way, tries to help them and in the process shows off her kick arse programming skills, therefore, getting what she wanted to achieve in the first place.

Adam lives in some sort of limbo, pining for his ex-girlfriend, yet, ready to move on. He is restless and unable to make a move forward, until Tessa asks for his help.

Both have some realisations to make about their wants vs. their needs in a mischievous, lovely, chaotic way. Here secondary characters are just as vivid and memorable as the protagonists, and the reader secretly wants to read all their stories with their happy endings.

Essentially, Level Up is a true comfort food. Tasty, easy to gobble up, and soon after you are hungry for more. Recommended.

In case of zombie apocalypse

Hey, guys! I feel like I should say this just in case :)
If you'd like to sponsor a fellow book addict who sometimes can't sleep at night worrying that she won't have enough books to read if internet goes down in the event of zombie apocalypse (I'm convinced it's one of the top five ways to go for human race) you can donate through Paypal to olivesandacorns at gmail dot com or buy a book through any of the links provided with my reviews which will send me a small percentage from the sale. All proceeds will go towards my enormous TBR. I will also shelter you on the remote farm in Portugal when zombie apocalypse starts provided you survive getting there. There will be books, yay?
Thank you! Love you all
