Contemporary Romance Review: Friends Without Benefits by Penny Reid

Friends Without Benefits: An Unrequited Romance by Penny Reid (Knitting in The City #2)

review request from the author

Synopsis from Goodreads
Friends Without Benefits can be read as a standalone, is a full length 120k word novel, and is book#2 in the Knitting in the City Series.

There are three things you need to know about Elizabeth Finney: 1) She suffers from severe sarcastic syndrome, especially when she's unnerved, 2) No one unnerves her like Nico Manganiello, and 3) She knows how to knit.

Elizabeth Finney is almost always right about everything: the musical merits of boy bands are undervalued by society, “benefits” with human Ken dolls are better without friendship, and the sun has set on her once-in-a-lifetime chance for true love. But when Elizabeth’s plans for benefits without friendship are disarmed by the irritatingly charismatic and chauvinistic Nico Manganiello- her former nemesis- she finds herself struggling to maintain the electric fence around her heart while avoiding electrocution or, worse, falling in love.

There are three things you should know about Penny Reid: her wit is razor sharp, her characters are odd and charming, and at last, her romances are tender and sincere to the point of leaving you teary-eyed.

I admit Neanderthal Seeks Human is still my favorite, but Friends Without Benefits packs a hell of an emotional punch, and I found it absolutely adorable.

Nico is Elizabeth's childhood love. Years later she is convinced she won't fall in love again and jumps from one meaningless fling to another while Nico stars in a very successful comedy show.

Then his niece becomes very ill and her only chance for recovery is some sort of a revolutionary treatment in the hospital Elizabeth works. They see each other again, and Nico insists on Doctor Finney treating his niece and no one else.

She is scared out of her wits, totally out of her comfort zone, and he is very insistent and determined to win her. Add to the mix a disastrous school reunion, a dangerous celebrity stalker, and a mind blowingly romantic ending, and I swear your heart will be melting.

Any time you need to cheer yourself up, pick up Penny's books. Her writing is absolutely wonderful, and I for one know I'll be reading whatever else she publishes in the future.

In case of zombie apocalypse

Hey, guys! I feel like I should say this just in case :)
If you'd like to sponsor a fellow book addict who sometimes can't sleep at night worrying that she won't have enough books to read if internet goes down in the event of zombie apocalypse (I'm convinced it's one of the top five ways to go for human race) you can donate through Paypal to olivesandacorns at gmail dot com or buy a book through any of the links provided with my reviews which will send me a small percentage from the sale. All proceeds will go towards my enormous TBR. I will also shelter you on the remote farm in Portugal when zombie apocalypse starts provided you survive getting there. There will be books, yay?
Thank you! Love you all
