Synopsis from Goodreads
Award-winning author Juliet Marillier "weaves magic, mythology, and folklore into every sentence on the page" (The Book Smugglers). Now she begins an all-new and enchanting series that will transport readers to a magical vision of ancient Ireland...

In exchange for help escaping her long and wrongful imprisonment, embittered magical healer Blackthorn has vowed to set aside her bid for vengeance against the man who destroyed all that she once held dear. Followed by a former prison mate, a silent hulk of a man named Grim, she travels north to Dalriada. There she'll live on the fringe of a mysterious forest, duty bound for seven years to assist anyone who asks for her help.

Oran, crown prince of Dalriada, has waited anxiously for the arrival of his future bride, Lady Flidais. He knows her only from a portrait and sweetly poetic correspondence that have convinced him Flidais is his destined true love. But Oran discovers letters can lie. For although his intended exactly resembles her portrait, her brutality upon arrival proves she is nothing like the sensitive woman of the letters.

With the strategic marriage imminent, Oran sees no way out of his dilemma. Word has spread that Blackthorn possesses a remarkable gift for solving knotty problems, so the prince asks her for help. To save Oran from his treacherous nuptials, Blackthorn and Grim will need all their resources: courage, ingenuity, leaps of deduction, and more than a little magic.

8.5/10

This is basically my jam, my catnip, peeps. From Katherine Arden to Naomi Novik, from Robin McKinley, Sarah J.Maas to Grace Draven, this fairytale setting, misty, full of secrets and dark corners is what I love to read about the most.

The heroines are not damsels in distress, they kick ass in a spectacular fashion, and Juliet Marillier delivers all that. If I was comparing her writing mood to someone, I'd say the darkness of it all reminds me of Jacqueline Carey. Although Carey is very sensual, and there is absolutely no sex here. They both just do not shy away from describing dark parts of the human soul, exploring recovery from trauma and abuse and the savage need for vengeance.

Blackthorn is an older heroine, a wise woman, who stood up against a tyrannical ruler and got punished for it with extreme cruelty. Her husband and baby were burned alive and she was locked up in a prison for a year suffering rape, torture, and abuse until a fae got her out binding her with a contract for 7 years.

Her contract states that she has to stay in Dalriada for 7 years living as a wise woman and she can not say no if asked for help. After 7 years she is free to seek vengeance. If she breaks her contract, she will find herself back in the lockup.

One of the guys, Grim, who was tortured in the lockup alongside her, a massive mountain of a man, very reserved and introverted, decides to stay with Blackthorn and protect her. In reality, he clings to her to stay sane and battle his own demons.

These two settle into their new life and a mystery falls into their hands straight away, because Blackthorn is bound to say yes when prince Oran asks her to investigate what happened to change his fiance so much.

The way she approaches it with her teammate, the unhurried logic, and the internal monologues of both her and Grim are excellent. They are both so very practical and rational, they talk it out between themselves, I absolutely loved their teamwork.

It's a great mystery, and solid, steady writing, folks. And so very atmospheric! I enjoyed this book very much, and I am currently continuing with this series. I think after this I'll be trying everything else Marillier has written. Recommended.
