Aah, it's been a while since book three in the series, folks, so my memory was a bit hazy to start with, but it did not stop me from enjoying Blood Burns.

I remembered why I liked this series so much. Cass is who Anita Blake could have been without crazy fragile masculinity, doom and gloom, and constant sex talk in her life. (I still believe that anything after Obsidian Butterfly can be written off, but I digress).

So, our gal here is British who started a dating agency Dark Dates pairing up supes and humans in the first book. She also had this mysterious lover who was in and out of her life for a long time and who appeared many times when she was in danger to help her out. Throughout the previous three books and few delightful short stories, she acquired plenty of quirky, diverse friends, a very sexy friend with benefits, Laclos, who is a vamp who does not take himself seriously. And believe me, you want this funky delightful man in your life! And at last, she found out that her on and off lover, Cain, is an angel.

Somehow through many adventures, Laclos and Cain bonded to a budding bromance, and then in the third book Cain did something which got him into massive trouble with other angels for the sake of Laclos ( sorry, trying not to give too many spoilers in case you are unfamiliar with the series and want to read it), and got punished. Cass and Laclos were ordered not to look for him, and now 18 months later they finally know where he is and come to find him in New York.

Cain has no memory of anything including his own nature, and while Cass and Laclos are trying to figure out what to do with him they get caught up in a power grab in the city.

This was such a fun romp, peeps! Murder, mayhem, Trump, vampires who want to make vampires great again *shudders* and glorious shopping of course. Cause, while in New York, God forbid, you miss out on some shopping with your gal pals and one very fashionable vampire.

The plot was unraveling swiftly and I didn't even notice how quickly I got to the end. Thankfully, it looks like it's not the last book in the series, so I'd love to read what would happen with our team next.

What I really liked again is that Cass is very human. She has this Sense which can kind of scan a supernatural being to gauge its power, but she is weak and fragile compared to powers around her. She is very often terrified but brave and she does what she can for everyone she loves. Her relationship with Laclos is not complicated. They are definitely friends first and lovers second. It's certainly not the same as what she feels for Cain, not as deep, conflicted, and complex. It's interesting to see the dynamics of this trio. There is easy camaraderie, which was really enjoyable even in the present circumstances ( I am vague again on purpose).

It's a lovely, fun urban fantasy series, folks, with snarky British humor I love so much. The first book is a little shaky, but the series gets stronger with each book and every short story. Very much recommended.

* * *
