Ead Duryan is an outsider at court. Though she has risen to the position of lady-in-waiting, she is loyal to a hidden society of mages. Ead keeps a watchful eye on Sabran, secretly protecting her with forbidden magic.

Across the dark sea, Tané has trained to be a dragonrider since she was a child, but is forced to make a choice that could see her life unravel.

Meanwhile, the divided East and West refuse to parley, and forces of chaos are rising from their sleep.

Folks, I honestly tried so hard with this book, first buying it on kindle and finally listening to it on Audible, but it wasn't meant to be.

The pace was off, the narrator non-descript and it just wasn't grabbing me. Many characters who were supposed to be badass and likable in principle kept fading in the background, so I ended up listening to this book without paying much attention. And I couldn't find myself caring. So, this is just me, I've seen plenty of people gushing about this book.

High points for interesting world-building. I think this would look great on the screen. What about you, have you read it? Would you recommend it or not?

  5. Ooh, I hate when a book doesn't grab me and the pace is just all wrong.

    1. Yeah, it's a long book to invest in reading if you think you won't like it.

  7. I liked it I overall. I do think it was hard for her to do a standalone with so much worldbuilding. It had to be all over and done with in one go where series would space it out. I don't really like a lot of action in books so it was fine for me to just spend time in that world.

    1. I didn't realise I was a standalone. I thought I was just a beginning of a new series. Interesting. I wonder why she decided that?
