Friday Mini-Reviews #74: J.D. Robb, Grace Draven & V.E. Schwab

Haunted in Death by J.D. Robb (In Death #22.5)

Synopsis from Goodreads
Number Twelve is an urban legend in 2060 New York City. The hot club in the 1960s, it is now reported to be haunted?and cursed. Lieutenant Eve Dallas is called there to investigate the apparent murder of Radcliff Hopkins, its new owner and the grandson of the man who made Number Twelve a cultural icon. Several bullets from a banned gun end his dream of returning the building to its former glory. With everyone around her talking about the supernatural, pragmatic Eve won't let rumors of ghosts distract her from hard evidence. The case becomes even more bizarre when it appears to be linked to the suspicious disappearance of a rock star eighty-five years ago. As Eve searches for the connection, logic clashes with the unexplainable. She may be forced to face the threat of something more dangerous than a flesh-and-blood killer.

It was an okay short story, peeps. Unusual, because there were heavy paranormal elements here which is unusual for this series, but it was amusing when Eve kept trying to find a logical information for a situation which could not be explained. Of course, Peabody was the opposite and too eager to believe in scary ghosts.

***The Crown of the Queen: a novella of the Twelve Kingdoms by Jeffe Kennedy

Please note, that I'm only reviewing The Undying King by Grace Draven as me and Jeffe Kennedy's books unfortunately do not get along well. The Undying King was fabulous, peeps! To my surprise it was a whole new world not connected to the books I've already read, and I found the characters of Cededa and Imogen really engaging. Also, talk about scorching hot intimate scenes. *phew* Totally worth a read!

Vicious by V.E. Schwab (Vicious #1)

Synopsis from Goodreads

Victor and Eli started out as college roommates—brilliant, arrogant, lonely boys who recognized the same sharpness and ambition in each other. In their senior year, a shared research interest in adrenaline, near-death experiences, and seemingly supernatural events reveals an intriguing possibility: that under the right conditions, someone could develop extraordinary abilities. But when their thesis moves from the academic to the experimental, things go horribly wrong. Ten years later, Victor breaks out of prison, determined to catch up to his old friend (now foe), aided by a young girl whose reserved nature obscures a stunning ability. Meanwhile, Eli is on a mission to eradicate every other super-powered person that he can find—aside from his sidekick, an enigmatic woman with an unbreakable will. Armed with terrible power on both sides, driven by the memory of betrayal and loss, the archnemeses have set a course for revenge—but who will be left alive at the end?

Absolutely freaking fantastic book! And you know what is so great about it? Victor is an antihero who does good deeds against his own nature because they suit his purpose at the time and because he needs to stop someone who went completely deranged thinking himself a real hero and just going on a killing spree on innocent people. It's a fascinating read, and I was mesmerized by the author's immense talent. Definitely, recommended. A characterization to die for.
