Synopsis from Goodreads
From the New York Times bestselling author of The Winter King comes a breathtaking new tale of love and adventure set in the mystical land of Mystral...

He wasn't supposed to choose her...

Seafaring prince Dilys Merimydion has been invited to court the three magical princesses of Summerlea. To eradicate the pirates threatening Calberna and to secure the power of the Sea Throne, Dilys vows to return home with a fierce warrior-queen as his bride. But politics has nothing to do with unexpected temptation.

She didn't dare wed him...

A weathermage like her sisters, Gabriella Coruscate's gentleness exemplifies the qualities of her season name, Summer. Yet her quiet poise conceals dangerous powers she cannot begin to wield. Better to live without excitement, she reasons, than risk her heart and lose control— until an irresistible Sealord jolts her awake with a thunderclap of raw desire.

Until evil threatens everything they hold dear...

When pirates kidnap Summer and her sisters, Dilys is in a desperate quest to save the woman he loves. Only by combining his command of the seas with the unleashed fury of Summer's formidable gifts can they defeat their brutal enemies and claim the most priceless victory of all: true love.

Not for the first time I've noticed the similarities between C.L. Wilson's writing and Ann Bishop's Black Jewels series.

They both have rich world-building with main characters who are often damaged physically and psychologically, and who, at some point, face an unspeakable evil to only come out of the encounter stronger and more savage.

Summer is one of those. It takes a long time to fill her cup to the brim, but when it spills? Oh, boy! She goes on a rampage, with the reader in the background cheering her up all the way.

I adored the first half of this book. Dilys, the delectable Sealord, was a sweetheart, who patiently courted Gabi, once he realised she was The One for him. Serving and protecting strong women is a prominent part of Calbernan culture, which made him determined to find out what made Gabriella tick and why she kept rejecting him despite the insane mutual attraction.

I also found Gabriella Coruscate, Summer princess, fascinating. She's been fighting her inner demons and suppressing her tempestuous nature since early childhood, which put her under enormous pressure. She created this image of a kind, quiet, sweet, saintly Princess to avoid any strong temptations, and got trapped in it. Now the facade is cracking, and Dylis becomes the catalyst of much-needed change because he awakens her sexuality, which on top of everything else is too much to bottle up.

It's a fun, beautiful courtship to watch, full of gorgeous rituals and meaningful conversations between the main characters, sprinkled with a healthy dose of heat.

Summer is also a riot to watch with her sisters, Spring, Autumn and Khamsin whose love for each other shines through their every interaction. And of course, there is a bonus content of Khamsin with Wynter. *grins*

Saying all that, it IS a long read, and what threw me was that it was uneven. First half is a balanced slow burn, while the second is a whirlwind of super dramatic emotional responses and action scenes with a forced return to normality afterwards.

Something bad happens to Summer, but she does not have time to process it or to grieve. She is kind of forced to move on, and I was not happy about it at all.

The whole second half felt rushed, and I actually had to leave it for a couple of weeks before finishing reading this book, it was just not doing it for me for awhile.

So, yeah, issues, peeps. Personal growth or plot development were patchy comparing to the first book in series, but the world itself is so rich, the book is so beautiful, that even with all its flows it made me rate it really high.

Recommended.
