Friday Mini Reviews #81: Sarah MacLean, J.D. Robb & Leigh Bardugo

The Rogue Not Taken by Sarah MacLean (Scandal & Scoundrel #1)

bought

Synopsis from Goodreads
LADY SOPHIE'S SOCIETY SPLASH

The youngest of the infamous Talbot sisters scandalized society at the Liverpool Summer Soiree, striking her sister’s notoriously philandering husband and landing him backside-first in a goldfish pond. And we thought Sophie was the quiet one…

When she finds herself the target of very public aristocratic scorn, Sophie Talbot does what she must to escape the city and its judgment—she flees on the back of a carriage, vowing never to return to London…or to society. But the carriage isn’t saving her from ruin. It’s filled with it.

ROYAL ROGUE'S REIGN OF RAVISHMENT!

The Marquess of Eversley was espied descending a rose trellis—escaping an irate Earl and his once-future countess. No lady is safe from Eversley’s Engagement Ending Escapades!

Kingscote, the Marquess of Eversley, has never met a woman he couldn’t charm, a quality that results in a reputation far worse than the truth, a furious summons home, and a long, boring trip to the Scottish border. When King discovers stowaway Sophie, however, the trip becomes anything but boring.

WAR? OR MORE?

He thinks she’s trying to trick him into marriage. She wouldn’t have him if he were the last man on earth. But carriages bring close quarters, dark secrets, and unbearable temptation, and suddenly opposites are altogether too attractive…

A fantastic read, one of MacLean's strongest! It was funny, sweet and full of gorgeous banter. A case of wrong assumptions which was resolved well, a very plucky heroine and a decent, refreshing hero.Honestly, a lovely book, I just inhaled it.

This short story resolved way too easily. Still, I like how all J.D. Robb's shorts have paranormal elements. It's just a little bit different from her full novels. It's funny though that when Roarke and Eve go to some fancy do, it always ends up with murder! *grins*

Really enjoyed this one! Well crafted characters with layers upon layers which are slowly revealed to the reader, an intriguing  and almost impossible heist, and of course an explosive ending. Reminded me of The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch but with much less bawdiness and violence. Highly recommended, super entertaining!

Romantic Comedy Review: Obedient Series by Julia Kent

Maliciously Obedieint by Julia Kent (Obedient #1)

review copies courtesy of the author

Synopsis from Goodreads
Getting caught reading Fifty Shades of Grey in the parking lot at work wasn't the best way for 25-year-old Lydia Charles to meet her boss. A boss she didn't know she had. Matt Jones now had the job she had been waiting to apply for (and win) for the past year, and to add insult to injury, he's the kind of guy her parents would adore.

Damn it.

The only kid of six to choose to run off to Boston and leave behind her idyllic family in Maine, Lydia's determined to prove herself in the big city, but she has to keep Matt at arm's length. After a steamy elevator encounter that leaves her missing her panties – and most of her resolve – she decides that maybe it's time to let him get inside her.

In more ways than one.

But when Matt suddenly closes off she's upset and confused. When he also acts like he owns the place, she decides that malicious obedience – following his every command to the letter – will prove how much the department needs her creativity after he insists he knows best.

What Lydia doesn't know is that “Matt” is really Michael Bournham, the CEO of the company, part of an undercover reality television stunt. Keeping his hands off Lydia's luscious curves was becoming an exercise in restraint, but what was harder? Keeping his heart from her.

For Michael, Lydia's malicious obedience ignited a night of unbridled passion in the office that made him forget everything – including the rolling cameras – until it was too late. When unscrupulous producers make their lovemaking viral, Michael pulls out all the stops and calls in every favor as Lydia...maliciously obeys.

The Postman Knock #162

Hello, everyone!
How is things?
I am trying to be more active on blogosphere now that the temperatures have dropped to a comfortable level. There was just something about +40C in the shade which was turning my brain to mash this summer. Now it's +25-27C at its peak and it makes a massive difference.
I am also clearing out my kindle which is why you'd see a lot of DNFs in the next few Sunday posts. Basically my e-reader is full and I need to get rid of a lot of books that I've downloaded 3-4 years ago and never touched, because let's face it, - I'll probably never read them anyway!
In other news, it's been 3 years on 23rd of September since we moved to Portugal, and I've been loving every day of it.
That's it for personal news, hope you are all mighty fine.

Here is what I READ/LISTENED TO in the last week:

SECRET SINS stayed with me for awhile and my only regret was that it was so short! OVER THE EDGE was quite lovely but I wasn't happy with the twist in the plot.  And of course, FESTIVE IN DEATH was reliably excellent which happens to every J. D. Robb book. And hey, this counts as a Christmas read, right?

DNFs:

FORBIDDEN fell absolutely flat for me. I did not like the writing style in A WEDDING IN SPRINGTIME. And while I usually enjoy Sophia Nash, I couldn't care less about the plot in THE ONCE AND FUTURE DUCHESS. At last, while HIDDEN THINGS had a noirish feel, I was bored, so I refused to go past the first few chapters.

Friday Mini Reviews #80: J.D. Robb, Nalini Singh & Elizabeth Hoyt

Salvation in Death by J.D. Robb (In Death #27)

borrowed on audio

Synopsis from Goodreads
In the year 2060, sophisticated investigative tools can help catch a killer. But there are some questions even the most advanced technologies cannot answer.

Ridley Pearson has praised J. D. Robb’s suspense as “taut” and “nerve-jangling.” Her latest thriller sets a new standard for suspense, as the priest at a Catholic funeral mass brings the chalice to his lips--and falls over dead.

When Detective Lieutenant Eve Dallas confirms that the consecrated wine contained potassium cyanide, she’s determined to solve the murder of Father Miguel Flores, despite her discomfort with her surroundings. It’s not the bodegas and pawnshops of East Harlem that bother her, though the neighborhood is a long way from the stone mansion she shares with her billionaire husband, Roarke. It’s all that holiness flying around at St. Christobal’s that makes her uneasy.

A search of the victim’s sparsely furnished room reveals little-- except for a carefully hidden religious medal with a mysterious inscription, and a couple of underlined Bible passages. The autopsy reveals more: faint scars of knife wounds, a removed tattoo--and evidence of plastic surgery, suggesting that “Father Flores” may not have been the man his parishioners had thought. Now, as Eve pieces together clues that hint at gang connections and a deeply personal act of revenge, she believes she’s making progress on the case. Until a second murder--in front of an even larger crowd of worshippers--knocks the whole investigation sideways. And Eve is left to figure out who committed these unholy acts--and why.

This was a very intriguing book as it was far from Eve's usual high flyer investigations. The mystery is subtle but relentless, and I couldn't put away the book trying to figure out the motive for murder and who'd done it. Really well crafted plot, loved it!

I enjoyed the plot much more in this book than in a previous one. First of all, there is more of it. There is finally a shift in focus on other races rather than changelings. Forgotten sound to me like the best of both worlds. I still can't care less for sex scenes, which are super formulaic, but the world-building is fascinating which is why I continue reading this series.

Duke of Sin by Elizabeth Hoyt (Maiden Lane #10)

bought

Synopsis from Goodreads
A MAN OF SIN

Devastatingly handsome. Vain. Unscrupulous. Valentine Napier, the Duke of Montgomery, is the man London whispers about in boudoirs and back alleys. A notorious rake and blackmailer, Montgomery has returned from exile, intent on seeking revenge on those who have wronged him. But what he finds in his own bedroom may lay waste to all his plans.

A WOMAN OF HONOR

Born a bastard, housekeeper Bridget Crumb is clever, bold, and fiercely loyal. When her aristocratic mother becomes the target of extortion, Bridget joins the Duke of Montgomery's household to search for the incriminating evidence-and uncovers something far more dangerous.

A SECRET THAT THREATENS TO DESTROY THEM BOTH

Astonished by the deceptively prim-and surprisingly witty-domestic spy in his chambers, Montgomery is intrigued. And try as she might, Bridget can't resist the slyly charming duke. Now as the two begin their treacherous game of cat and mouse, they soon realize that they both have secrets-and neither may be as nefarious-or as innocent-as they appear . . .

One of the finest historical romances I've ever read, - this was, pardon my French, f*cking delicious! An antihero with a a twist; an unapologetic, determined and not in any way naive, heroine. *sigh* The heat is off the charts, the dialogues are to die for and the actual plot reminds me of Amanda Quick's romantic mysteries. Highly recommended, one of my top reads of the year.

The Postman Knock #161

Hey, guys!
How have you been? The week flew by so fast, I can hardly remember it. It was crazy!

Here is what I've READ/LISTENED TO in the last 2 weeks:

DNFs:

I am clearing out my kindle which is so full right now I need to delete a book to get a new one in. So I'm going through mostly a list of freebies and getting rid of those that feel dreadful after a few chapters. On Dublin Street is an exception. It's good, but I just couldn't care less about the main characters.

NETGALLEY/EDELWEISS/FOR REVIEW:

Thank you, publishers, Amanda Ryan and Julia Kent!

This is it for me, peeps.
Have a fantastic weekend and week ahead!

In case of zombie apocalypse

Hey, guys! I feel like I should say this just in case :)
If you'd like to sponsor a fellow book addict who sometimes can't sleep at night worrying that she won't have enough books to read if internet goes down in the event of zombie apocalypse (I'm convinced it's one of the top five ways to go for human race) you can donate through Paypal to olivesandacorns at gmail dot com or buy a book through any of the links provided with my reviews which will send me a small percentage from the sale. All proceeds will go towards my enormous TBR. I will also shelter you on the remote farm in Portugal when zombie apocalypse starts provided you survive getting there. There will be books, yay?
Thank you! Love you all
