The Painted Man by Peter V. Brett (The Demon Cycle #1)

bought on audio

Synopsis from Goodreads
As darkness falls after sunset, the corelings rise—demons who possess supernatural powers and burn with a consuming hatred of humanity. For hundreds of years the demons have terrorized the night, slowly culling the human herd that shelters behind magical wards—symbols of power whose origins are lost in myth and whose protection is terrifyingly fragile. It was not always this way. Once, men and women battled the corelings on equal terms, but those days are gone. Night by night the demons grow stronger, while human numbers dwindle under their relentless assault. Now, with hope for the future fading, three young survivors of vicious demon attacks will dare the impossible, stepping beyond the crumbling safety of the wards to risk everything in a desperate quest to regain the secrets of the past. Together, they will stand against the night.

A superb read/listen! I was on the edge of my seat most of the time. It's edgy, epic, with very rich world-building and captivating characters. I am totally looking forward to listening to the next one in this series. Great fights, by the way, although it has a very male feel to it which can be easily seen in the way the the issues concerning women exclusively are treated by the author. Recommended.

Personal Geography by Tamsen Parker (The Compass #1)

Synopsis from Goodreads

Powerhouse consultant India Burke is notorious for her razor-sharp mind, her incisive tongue, and for always being in control. But during her “lost weekends”—out-of-town, one-and-done, anonymous rendezvous solely for the purpose of kinky sex—she craves a submissive role.

Cris Ardmore, India’s latest tryst, is a Dominant who calls an isolated Hawaiian paradise home. India’s expecting forty-eight hours of contractually defined sex, but instead of serving as just another BDSM Band-Aid, Cris wants to know the real India Burke. Despite her aversion to anything approaching intimacy, India is hooked by their incredible sexual chemistry.

With tension ratcheting up in her professional life, India needs the release Cris offers more than ever, but her repeated visits come with their own risks. No matter how strong their attraction, India is determined to maintain her boundaries in order to keep her life whole after her first love blew it apart. She must choose between taking a chance and handing Cris the road map to her heart or locking down her borders before he does any more damage.

I seem to be enjoying this writer's style immensely. She creates scorching hot reads, but at the same time they are gentle and lovely. India is a kickass heroine, an iron-willed lady in her work, but a secret submissive in her sex life. This type of outlet allows her to unwind and relax from the insane pressure of her day job, which I found fascinating. And everything works until she meets Chris, from whose relentless attention she is unable to walk away. He is literally wearing her down. This is only the first half of the story which will end in Intimate Geography. Recommended. It straddles a good line between Cherise Sinclair's simplified definition of BDSM and Roni Loren's complexity.

Visions in Death by J.D. Robb (In Death #19)

bought on audio

Synopsis from Goodreads

A brand-new novel in the number-one New York Times- bestselling In Death series set in 2059 New York City. As technology and humanity collide, Detective Eve Dallas searches the darkest corners of Manhattan for an elusive killer with a passion for collecting souls...

On one of the city's hottest nights, New York Police Lieutenant Eve Dallas is sent to Central Park-and into a hellish new investigation. The victim is found on the rocks, just above the still, dark water of the lake. Around her neck is a single red ribbon. Her hands are posed, as if in prayer. But it is the eyes- removed with such precision, as if done with the careful hands of a surgeon-that have Dallas most alarmed.

As more bodies turn up, each with the same defining scars, Eve is frantic for answers. Against her instincts, she accepts help from a psychic who offers one vision after another-each with shockingly accurate details of the murders. And when partner and friend Peabody is badly injured after escaping an attack, the stakes are raised. Are the eyes a symbol? A twisted religious ritual? A souvenir? With help from her husband, Roarke, Dallas must uncover the killer's motivation before another vision becomes another nightmare. . . .

Another fantastic thriller from Nora Roberts. Great characterization, a fab twist in the investigation, a clever use of secondary characters. This book was gruesome and emotional, and I really loved it! Total recommend.
