Ten Gothic Movies or TV Series to Watch on Halloween, A Guest Post and Giveaway from M.C. Frank

Hello everyone! I’m so excited to be sharing the 10 best movies and TV series episodes to watch on a chilly October night with you!

Some of these choices are vintage films, some have a creepy fairytale feel to them, and there are a few classics thrown in for good measure. So sit back and enjoy this selection of my favorite get-into-a-Halloween-mood material, which I enjoy watching all year round. Hopefully you’ll agree with me on some, and maybe you’ll discover one or two new ones.

Edward Scissorhands
I love all of Burton’s movies that have this type of sad, silent boy as a main character. Edwards Scissorhands combines that with a quirky love story as well as a creepy plot. Excellent!

Jane Eyre
My top favorite Jane Eyre adaptation is the 2006 BBC TV series, which consists of four episodes, but I’ve watched pretty much every adaptation of the film that’s been made from 1936 or thereabouts to this day. This is the definitive gothic tale, and every adaptation has a different take on the creepy atmosphere, the passionate love story and the angst.

Rebecca

 This is one of the vintage black-and-white films I was telling you about -that is, the Hitchcock version of Rebecca, which is the only one I’m willing to count, is). It’s more of an atmospheric movie, but the suspense lasts up until the very end, and the plot… well, on the off-chance you haven’t watched it yet, I don’t want to spoil you. And if you have, don’t you just adore it? You can’t wait until you rent it again, right? Right? I know I can’t.

Into The Woods
I discovered this recently, since it was only made into a film this year (or last year), but apparently it’s been around as a musical for a long time. The movie is exquisite, full of dark fairytale characters and plots, and the songs got stuck in my head and I re-watched it a couple of times trying to memorize the lyrics. So good!

Northanger Abbey
This is Jane Austen’s attempt at a gothic romance, which turns out to be more of a satire than anything else, BUT the movie versions of it have some very dark and mysterious scenes where, if you haven’t read the book, you’ve no idea what’s going to happen. It’s also very romantic, very funny and very smart. What more can you want?

Charade
This is an Audrey Hepburn movie that scared the bejeezus out of me. And as soon as I finished it, I was in love. Let’s just say there’s murder and hidden identities and stolen treasure among other things in it. There’s also Cary Grant. Need I say anything else. I need not.

Teen Wolf
I started binge-watching this series a few months ago and was taken aback by its creepy feel. Although I’m not a super-fan of its teenage-hormone-ridden characters or plotline, I think it’s perfect for this time of year, or if you want to watch something that will completely immerse you in this atmosphere of things going bump in the night and danger lurking behind every corner, look no further. Besides, wolves. Who doesn’t love a hot teenage werewolf, right?

Supernatural

This one -another series- has everything. Ghosts, ghouls, you name it. It’s ‘supernatural’ after all… I admit I’ve skipped a few episodes of this one because I found them too scary, and also I’ve fast-forwarded more than a few scenes. But then again I scare easily. If you don’t, lots of people are crazy about this show.

Sherlock

Now, let’s get down to business. If you’re not a Sherlock fan, well… you should be. Sherlock, for those who don’t know, is a murder-mystery/investigation type of show, which enjoys tearing our insides to pieces with season cliffhangers. But there’s an episode called The Hounds of Baskerville, which is really creepy, with weird sounds and fog and a monster dog. Needless to say, I love love love this series. You should, too. You do, don’t you?

Marple and Poirot

I’ve kept my absolute favourite for last. Also, this is kind of a cheat, because these are two tv series. The one is called ‘Agatha Christie’s Marple’ and the other is ‘Agatha Christie’s Poirot’. The first is an ongoing series, with episodes added to it every few years, and Poirot is finished, I believe. Still there are plenty of scary, ghostly, murderous moments in most of the episodes. Nemesis stands out from ‘Marple’, a murder investigation where a group of seemingly unrelated people are invited on a creepy country tour. One of them is a murderer. The creepiest of them all, however (Mark Gatiss I’m looking at you) is an episode of ‘Poirot’ titled Haloween Party. There’s a witch roaming about, there’s a list of unresolved murders and there’s a little girl in a costume found face down in a bucket full of water, a bit apple floating next to her head. Yep. It’s that good.

So that’s my list of gothic/creepy Haloween films and series. What is yours?

 M.C. Frank has been living in a world of stories ever since she can remember herself. She started writing them down when she could no longer stand the characters in her head screaming at her to give them life.
She has had two other books published in another language to great critical acclaim, both titles in the young adult genre. She has also had numerous articles published, including a regular short-story column in a local bimonthly magazine.
She likes to write romances, and then place them in brutal post-apocalyptic universes flooded with water or medieval forests plagued by greedy Sheriffs, but she also loves writing adventures and hopes to be able to explore the crafting of contemporary fiction next.
Recently she got her university degree in physics and is now free to pursue her love of reading and writing, as well as her freelance job of editor-in-chief. She currently lives with her husband in a home filled with candles, laptops and notebooks, where she rearranges her overflowing bookshelves every time she feels stressed -which is often, since she is currently editing her next novel, her NaNoWriMo (winning!) project of 2014.
Find M.C. Frank:

Summary

 The duke of Ashton sits at the Opera at Vauxhall Gardens, bored out of his mind, and plans murder.
He curses the day that brought the little governess, destitute and sad, at his door eight months ago, to upset his careless if a bit meaningless existence.
How could he have guessed the terrible, evil secrets she was hiding? And now that he knows all, the truth appears wilder, even more despicable than even he could have imagined. He hadn’t counted on losing his heart to her, of course, but he did.

What he doesn’t know is that a tendril of the shadows of madness and sin that followed Beatrice to his door is still out there, looking for something to devour.
The only one who can save him from the darkness is the girl herself, but he knows he’ll never see her again. He who once prided himself on his indifference to other human beings, feels his chest constrict with pain every time he even thinks of her.

Beatrice, smart, gentle, kind-hearted, lovely.
Ruined.

A perfect blend of darkness and light, this Regency retelling of Jane Eyre will break your heart as well as uplift it.

Guys, if you tell M.C. Frank what is your favorite film to watch on Halloween, you will be entered in a giveaway for her Gothic novel, Ruined. Good luck!

 a Rafflecopter giveaway

I asked M.C. what influenced her to write Ruined and here is what she is saying:

Influences for my novel, Ruined, were Jane Austen and Georgette Heyer, the best Regency writers the world has ever seen (Austen wrote Regency as a contemporary, but Heyer was a genius as well, so it’s really hard for me to choose between them. Besides, their styles differ greatly). Movies that inspired me were The Age of Innocence and The Governess, a little obscure film that stars Minnie Driver and took my breath away with its raw sensuality and deep emotions.

The list of movies I mention above was, of course, a great help in getting into that dark, gothic mood. I must have watched Northanger Abbey and Persuasion about a hundred times. Their underlying sadness as well as the calmness of their pacing helped the outlining and actual writing process a lot.

Thank you so much to Karina and Nocturnal Book Reviews for welcoming me on here. Karina, I love your blog and I’m really honored to be a very small part of it with this guest post! Looks like it’s Halloween all year round in here. I love it.

Happy Halloween, everyone!

Friday Mini Reviews #51: Jim Butcher, J.D. Robb & Tijan

Cold Days by Jim Butcher (Harry Dresden #14)

bought on audio

Synopsis from Goodreads
HARRY DRESDEN LIVES!!!

After being murdered by a mystery assailant, navigating his way through the realm between life and death, and being brought back to the mortal world, Harry realizes that maybe death wasn’t all that bad. Because he is no longer Harry Dresden, Chicago’s only professional wizard.

He is now Harry Dresden, Winter Knight to Mab, the Queen of Air and Darkness. After Harry had no choice but to swear his fealty, Mab wasn’t about to let something as petty as death steal away the prize she had sought for so long. And now, her word is his command, no matter what she wants him to do, no matter where she wants him to go, and no matter who she wants him to kill.

Guess which Mab wants first?

Of course, it won’t be an ordinary, everyday assassination. Mab wants her newest minion to pull off the impossible: kill an immortal. No problem there, right? And to make matters worse, there exists a growing threat to an unfathomable source of magic that could land Harry in the sort of trouble that will make death look like a holiday.

Beset by enemies new and old, Harry must gather his friends and allies, prevent the annihilation of countless innocents, and find a way out of his eternal subservience before his newfound powers claim the only thing he has left to call his own…

His soul.

Well, thank God, Harry is back on the horse! Last book made me worried he was losing his groove. As usual, lots and lots of cool action, impossible situations in which Harry's life is getting shittier and shittier...Still, better him than us, right? So enjoyed this one, peeps!
* * *

One of my favorite books in series because of Leonardo and Mavis. I so love them, they are a couple of impossible romantics! Also, Eve solidly establishes that every time there is a party she ends up in a sorry state, which makes me giggle. Read on, peeps!
* * *

Drama-llama is rearing its ugly head! Oh the bullying and blackmailing and eye-rolling! Seriously, this book needed popcorn, it was so much like a soap opera. Who writes this crack?! Don't take it seriously, guys, but read it as an addictive entertainment. That's all.
* * *

I find I'm at loss for words with this book.

The Postman Knock #139

Hello, ladies and gents!
Sorry for long radio silence. The farm has been insanely busy and inundated with baby animals like this one...
Meet Issa. She is only 2 weeks old, but already an adorable speedy Gonzales.

Anyway, here is what I've READ/LISTENED TO:

THE KINGMAKERS finally made it on my mp3 player, and definitely wasn't what I expected, although it was a gripping read! THE IMMORTAL HEIGHTS was fantastic, and I already talked about it. Read it if you get a chance! THE LIES OF LOCKE LAMORA was tremendously entertaining, especially on audio. It's the humour, the sheer snark, which reminded me of Joss Whedon, which made me absolutely fall in love with this book.  A BOLLYWOOD AFFAIR was as lovely as expected, and I'll definitely be listening to more from Sonali Dev. AN ANCIENT PEACE was good but confusing, as I need to start the series from the beginning. THE WINNER'S CURSE had its moments, but overall it wasn't as good as I expected. I'm a sucker for Cinderella type of stories involving royals, so I kind of binge read HEIR UNTAMED and KING & KINGDOM, and it was delicious. There are still four more books to go... *gulp* POSSESSION IN DEATH was fun short story, and at last, SHIFTER PLANET had the most glorious kick ass female scientist. The amount of saved quotes from that book on my kindle just proves her awesomeness :)

Don't panic! I have an explanation for the appallingly low rating. Marsters couldn't narrate it at the time, and it was narrated by someone else, and I couldn't listen to it at all. It was horrible! Since then, they re-released another version of the audiobook with Marsters, and I'm sure if I listened to it, I'd have given it at least 7.5 out of 10. Otherwise the plot was a downer after the shocker of a previous book. It couldn't compare.
* * *

Glory in Death by J.D. Robb (In Death #2)

Both victims are beautiful and highly successful women; their glamorous lives and loves were the talk of the city. And their intimate relations with men of power and wealth provide Eve with a long list of suspects - including her own lover, Roarke. As a woman, Eve is compelled to trust the man who shares her bed. But as a cop, it's her job to explore every avenue ... no matter where it might lead.

I am absolutely loving this series on audio, Susan Ericksen does a stellar job narrating it. While the mystery in this book is fairly straightforward, it's the human element which continues to fascinate me. Roarke, Eve, Mavis, even Peabody, who appears for the first time. Also, one nasty character definitely got what they deserved :)
* * *

Coda by C.D. Reiss (Songs of Submission #9)

bought

Synopsis from Goodreads
Did you want a pat little ending about Jonathan and I riding off into the sunset? Did you want flowers and stars? Man, I wish it was all soft filters and violins. I wish we could fight about who cleaned the bathroom or who was cooking dinner. But I knew I was never destined for simple contentment.

I almost committed murder for him. I almost tore us apart to save him. How do you get back on the horse after that? Because, I promise you, nothing is the same. Nothing.

I’ve earned our happily ever after. Now I have to survive it.

Amazon kindle US/UK

 8/10
It's actually a really believable HEA for these two difficult, complex characters. Surviving something like heart transplant is bound to change a man. Almost losing someone you love so desperately changes a woman. Now both Jonathan and Monica are struggling with the aftermath, the anxieties, the smothering cautious handling of each other and the secrets. They will have to break and remake each other to find their balance again. And I really enjoyed seeing them do it.
* * *

Science Fiction Review: An Ancient Peace by Tanya Huff

 An Ancient Peace by Tanya Huff ( Confederation #6 Peacekeeper #1)

Egalley thanks to DAW

Synopsis from Goodreads
Gunnery Sergeant Torin Kerr had been the very model of a Confederation Marine. But when she learned the truth about the war the Confederation was fighting, she left the military for good.

But Torin couldn’t walk away from preserving and protecting everything the Confederation represented. Instead, she drew together an elite corps of friends and allies to take on covert missions that the Justice Department and the Corps could not—or would not—officially touch. Torin just hoped the one they were about to embark on wouldn’t be the death of them.

Ancient H’san grave goods are showing up on the black market—grave goods from just before the formation of the Confederation, when the H’san gave up war and buried their planet-destroying weapons...as grave goods for the death of war. Someone is searching for these weapons and they’re very close to finding them. As the Elder Races have turned away from war, those searchers can only be members of the Younger Races.

Fortunately, only the Corps Intelligence Service has this information. Unfortunately, they can do nothing about it—bound by laws of full disclosure, their every move is monitored.

Though Torin Kerr and her team are no longer a part of the military, the six of them tackling the H’san defenses and the lethally armed grave robbers are the only chance the Confederation has. The only chance to avoid millions more dead.

But the more Torin learns about the relationship between the Elder Races and the Younger, the more she begins to fear war might be an unavoidable result.

 Oh man, how do I even describe this book? It's big. Or it felt big, because it dragged for the first half. It took me ages to read it because the mind kept snagging at something and I'd lose interest and put it down. It's like it's been crammed too much with everything. I was starting to feel disappointed.

Then the second half happened. And suddenly it felt epic. It felt profound, and my heart was racing.

This is beyond doubt one of the best and one of the hardest books in the series, and I really really enjoyed it. Action-packed, emotionally heart wrenching, Changes is a breaking point in Harry Dresden's character development. Hugely recommended installment!

Naked in Death by J.D. Robb (In Death #1)

 Funny how over the years I've read this book so many times, but ended up reviewing the whole series in audio format. While it starts shakily, it's a striking blend of romance and sci-fi with immensely charismatic characters, Eve Dallas and Roarke. With 40+ books in the series all written by Nora Roberts as J.D. Robb these books continue to be as strong and as entertaining as ever. Thoroughly recommended. They are addictive as hell!
* * *

Fallen Crest High by Tijan (Fallen Crest High #1)

Synopsis from Goodreads

Maybe change is a good thing.

This book contains adult/mature young adult situations.

Alright, I got absolutely hooked on this book when I first went on Wattpad. Sooo not my style, incredibly melodramatic, high maintenance and improbable, this is an entertaining as hell soap, my dear readers! I couldn't stop reading about Samantha with her anxiety disorder and her new highly destructive step brothers who seem to rule their tiny community and pretty much do what and who they want... Don't even let me start on her mother! *rolls her eyes* Yep, that was something!
 * * *
