Synopsis from Goodreads
It should have been a short suspended-animation sleep. But this time Rose wakes up to find her past is long gone-- and her future full of peril.

Rosalinda Fitzroy has been asleep for sixty-two years when she is woken by a kiss. Locked away in the chemically induced slumber of a stasis tube in a forgotten subbasement, sixteen-year-old Rose slept straight through the Dark Times that killed millions and utterly changed the world she knew. Now, her parents and her first love are long gone, and Rose-- hailed upon her awakening as the long-lost heir to an interplanetary empire-- is thrust alone into a future in which she is viewed as either a freak or a threat. Desperate to put the past behind her and adapt to her new world, Rose finds herself drawn to the boy who kissed her awake, hoping that he can help her to start fresh. But when a deadly danger jeopardizes her fragile new existence, Rose must face the ghosts of her past with open eyes-- or be left without any future at all.

A Long, Long Sleep has been on my shelves for ages, and this week when I realised that I read very little YA this year and was browsing my kindle I finally got to it.

It is a quiet sci fi read, but with complex characters and a heartbreaking story, and I found myself enjoying it immensely.

Rose has been is stasis for over sixty years, so she missed a lot - Dark Times which culled the majority of human population; the explosion of new technology, the emergence of new slang, and death of everyone she knew and love. When a boy finds her bed in a forgotten basement she wakes up a heiress of a global powerful corporation UniCorp.

Attempting to live a new life is extremely hard, but she makes a few friends and continues with her art until she finds out that there is an unstoppable assassin gunning for her. Then all the sense of normalcy fades away and a bunch of old secrets come to light threatening to destroy her life and sanity.

I loved Rose. She started as an insecure, fragile girl, but her new life soon changed her character to someone gutsy, quick thinking and able to empathize. She was real and I could feel for her, which is why I consider her story so heartbreaking.

The book is split between Rose's memories  and her present, and it all really comes together in a powerful ending. The secondary characters, her friends, Bren and Otto are superb. None of them are trying to be love interests but instead there is a wonderful friendship and a sense of camaraderie.

There is a sequel to this book, No Life But This, coming out in a few days which I'll definitely be reading. Overall, this is a fantastic book, really well plotted, well written and contemplative. It's a clean read, so I'd recommend it to absolutely anyone.
