Fantasy Audiobook Review: Heir to The Shadows by Anne Bishop

Heir to The Shadows by Anne Bishop ( The Black Jewels #2)

Synopsis from Goodreads
Enough time has passed for the young girl Jaenelle, heir to the magical Darkness, for her physical wounds to heal, while amnesia keeps her frightening memories at bay. But with Saetan--a Black-Jewelled Warlord Prince and Jaenelle's foster-father--to protect her, she will continue to grow. Her magic will mature. Her memories will return. And Jaenelle will face her destiny when she remembers Daemon, Saetan's son, who made the ultimate sacrifice for her love....

I am happy to say, that Heir to The Shadows is a much much easier book to stomach than Daughter of The Blood.

Away from the horrors of her childhood, hidden in a different realm, Jaenelle recovers from abuse and deep trauma, and slowly becomes a formidable young witch. Her memory comes back to her in parts, and Saetan does not push her to remember everything quickly which is why she doesn't remember Daemon - her friend and future consort straight away.

In the meantime, Saetan and Jaenelle are battling with The Dark Council which through nasty intrigues from The Dark Priestess is trying to conquer Shadow Realm which became a dear home for Jaenelle and her friends.

Then Lucivar accidentally finds Jaenelle when he decides to commit suicide and Jaenelle heals him from the brink of death. Suddenly Saetan receives back one of his sons, and Jaenelle is gifted with a much needed older brother - bossy, tender and annoying.

By the time she remembers Daemon, he is lost in The Twisted Kingdom and most of his sanity is eaten away, and Jaenelle drops everything amidst a massive attack on Kindred in her realm and gives a hand as her shadow self to Daemon showing him the way out of The Twisted Kingdom.

There is a lot happening in this book, and it spans from when Jaenelle is 12 until she is 27-28 (I think). We meet her friends that we only heard about in the first book, and she finally establishes her court.

However, according to Tersa, the triangle is not finished. She has father, brother, but her lover who is her father's mirror is missing, and we only understand why she needs Daemon so urgently when we start reading book three...

In a typical manner for Anne Bishop, this is a dark book, full of cruel, twisted moments, and the author is merciless with her characters, so don't get comfortable! Anyone can be killed off in the most unexpected, heartbreaking manner...

Overall, excellent fantasy, which only gets better and richer with each installment in this series. I didn't even mind John Sharian, the narrator, that much this time. He is still annoying, but I'm used to him now. Very much recommended.

In case of zombie apocalypse

Hey, guys! I feel like I should say this just in case :)
If you'd like to sponsor a fellow book addict who sometimes can't sleep at night worrying that she won't have enough books to read if internet goes down in the event of zombie apocalypse (I'm convinced it's one of the top five ways to go for human race) you can donate through Paypal to olivesandacorns at gmail dot com or buy a book through any of the links provided with my reviews which will send me a small percentage from the sale. All proceeds will go towards my enormous TBR. I will also shelter you on the remote farm in Portugal when zombie apocalypse starts provided you survive getting there. There will be books, yay?
Thank you! Love you all
