Urban Fantasy Early Review: Magic Breaks by Ilona Andrews

Magic Breaks by Ilona Andrews (Kate Daniels #7)

Egalley thanks to Ace

Synopsis from Goodreads
No matter how much the paranormal politics of Atlanta change, one thing always remains the same: if there’s trouble, Kate Daniels will be in the middle of it…

As the mate of the Beast Lord, Curran, former mercenary Kate Daniels has more responsibilities than it seems possible to juggle. Not only is she still struggling to keep her investigative business afloat, she must now deal with the affairs of the pack, including preparing her people for attack from Roland, a cruel ancient being with god-like powers. Since Kate’s connection to Roland has come out into the open, no one is safe—especially those closest to Kate.

As Roland’s long shadow looms ever nearer, Kate is called to attend the Conclave, a gathering of the leaders from the various supernatural factions in Atlanta. When one of the Masters of the Dead is found murdered there, apparently at the hands of a shapeshifter, Kate is given only twenty-four hours to hunt down the killer. And this time, if she fails, she’ll find herself embroiled in a war which could destroy everything she holds dear…

This is why I love Ilona and Gordon Andrews! For their explosive, mind-blowing, action-driven, charismatic books. Their Kate Daniels series for me personally is like a Holy Grail of urban fantasy, and yes, Anne Bishop came close to it this year, but Kate and Curran have something Simon and Meg don't have yet – lots and lots of mutual history.

Anyway, let's put my ramblings into a more coherent review.

Magic Breaks is a culmination of something we were anticipating for the last 6 books – meeting Roland. We knew we were close to head on confrontation after Hugh's attempt in Magic Rises, but we also knew that book #7 would not be the last one.

Let's just say that when trouble finds Kate this time in Atlanta, despite all her preparations, she is not ready to face it, and personally it hits her very hard, because Curran is not at her side. In fact, this is probably the hardest journey Kate has ever done because her mate whom she leans on is absent for half of the book (not by choice!), and she is dealing with all her strongest fears on her own.

There is a lot of heartbreak here, a lot of mind-blowing action sequences and sacrifice. No characters are spared including Kate herself. I am trying to avoid any spoilers here really hard, otherwise I would gash about scene after glorious scene and how they wretched me or made me cheer for Kate.

I'll sidetrack here and mention Hugh. *sigh* I would gladly name him Villain of The Year, because he is such a beautiful, charismatic sociopath, I can not help but feel a little for him. Even when he goes full blown evil... The fight in Magic Rises or the scene with The Order in this book? Outstanding! Besides, his chats with Kate are always a reward on its own, they are that entertaining.
"Don't bring my people into it," I said. "I'll make you regret it."
"I love it when you make threats," Hugh said.
"You'll love what follows even more."
Ghastek kept looking at Hugh, then at me, at Hugh, then at me.
"I can't wait , baby," Hugh said.
Only Curran called me baby. He was goading me.

All in all the build up was worth it. It was mind-blowing, amazing, wonderful reading, and my mind is fried. I don't know what to expect now from the next two books in the series but I know nothing will stop me from reading them.

Wholeheartedly recommended, READ IT!
