Friday Mini-Reviews #19: Roni Loren, Madelynne Ellis & Ian McDonald

Loving on The Edge Series by Roni Loren

bought
18+ only

Synopsis from Goodreads
Brynn LeBreck has dedicated herself to helping women in crisis, but she never imagined how personal her work would get, or where it would take her. Her younger sister is missing, suspected to be hiding from cops and criminals alike at a highly secretive BDSM retreat-a place where the elite escape to play out their most extreme sexual fantasies. To find her, Brynn must go undercover as a sexual submissive. Unfortunately, The Ranch is invitation only. And the one master who can get her in is from the darkest corner of Brynn's past.

Brynn knows what attorney Reid Jamison is like once stripped of his conservative suit and tie. Years ago she left herself vulnerable only to have him crush her heart. Now she needs him again. Back on top. And he's all too willing to engage. But as their primal desires and old wounds are exposed, the sexual games escalate-and so does the danger. Their hearts aren't the only things at risk. Someone else is watching, playing by his own rules. And his game could be murder.

I can't recommend this series enough, peeps! Lovely, intelligent, emotional and very hot. If you ever read Masters of Shadowlands by Cherise Sinclair, this has a similar set up, but in my opinion is written better. Melt Into You and Caught Up in You are two of my favorite novels. Especially, the last one, because the main character is a geek at heart who tries to replay Pretty Woman's ending to conquer his girl's heart. *grinning* Thoroughly recommended.

Dark Designs by Madelynne Ellis

bought
18+ only

Synopsis from Goodreads
Remy Davies is under pressure, as the designer for an opulent gothic wedding. There's the over-stressed bride, a trinity of vampire-obsessed bridesmaids, a wayward groom, and then there's the best man . . . Silk looks like he's been drawn by a manga artist; beautiful, exotic, and with a predatory sexuality. Remy has to have him, in her bed and between the pages of her new catalogue. Remy is about to launch herself into the alternative fashion world, and Silk is going to sell it for her whether he knows it or not. But Silk is nobody's toy, and for all his androgyny, he's determinedly heterosexual. Pity, since Remy's biggest fantasy is to see him making out with her Japanese biker, sometime boyfriend, Takeshi.

Madelynne Ellis is another very talented erotic romance author, whose backlist I'm slowly reading through. This book was way too much fun! The main heroine was tailoring a big Gothic wedding in an honest-to-God British castle. She was also fascinated by manga, and between Takeshi, one of her models, and Silk, the best man, she didn't know where to lay her eyes, this was such a manlicious feast! Of course, it was all also decadent, shallow and crazy, but Miss Ellis just had to have a bit of a laugh about all those Gothic cultural extremes. Enjoyed it and recommend it!

I can't say I've enjoyed Be My Enemy as much as Planesrunner, but it had some pretty awesome moments (the destruction of Nahn - one of them). Sen as always is pretty charming, and I adore the whole mad crew of Everness, but I wasn't keen on Everett M's side of story and the plot development was not as exciting as in book #1. However, the ending opens a lot of scary possibilities, and I can't wait to see what happens next.
