The Postman Knock #35

How is everyone, peeps?
I had a quiet week and went back to listening Bjork again. Haven't heard her for ages.
Funny how you get back to your old favorites over the years...

I've READ:

ASSASSIN'S GAMBIT is full of awesome, peeps. Buy it and read it right now! It has all the parts of fantasy I love so much. A strong, sensible heroine and a smart, clever, ruthless and at the same time cheeky hero. That couple had so much chemistry, it was beautiful. Most of all, they worked through their issues together. Win all around. DARKBORN was another very pleasant surprise. I loved this book! It strongly reminded me of Gordon Dahlquist's The Glass Books of The Dream Eaters. I'll be continuing with this series. At last, IN DEFENSE OF THE QUEEN - what a wild, intoxicating ride from beginning to the end. I've downloaded it from Netgalley and read it in one sitting. Love Diener's books!

DNF:

I'm not very lucky with dystopians I keep picking in the last few weeks, am I? I personally felt that this book was terrible on many fronts, worse than Eve by Anna Carey, because I am old and jaded and require my characters to have a certain bit of maturity in them. But then again, Branded like Eve has a lot of 5 star reviews and I'm sure it will be popular. Abi, one of the authors I spoke to is gracious and lovely, and I wish her best of luck, but this book was ultimately not for me, and I suspect not for anyone who've read The Handmaid's Tale. It's hard to beat that, peeps.

LIBRARY:

Thanks to Ellie for bringing my attention to this one!

Thanks to Amazon!

FOR REVIEW VIA NETGALLEY:

Thanks you, Michelle! I've read this book in one sitting and enjoyed every minute of it.

This is it.
here is a bit of Bjork for you :)
Happy Sunday!

Breathtaking, isn't she?

July Paranormal Releases I'm Dying to Read!

I've read The Mistress and I've pre-ordered Magic Rises and Hellfire. I also have Forsaken by The Others waiting to be reviewed.
I know I said I would't read anymore Anita Blake, but I have this perverse curiousity to see if she gets any worse as a writer even if I know almost exactly what's gonna happen in this book :)
So, which releases are you waiting for?

Friday Mini Reviews #3

Frost Burned by Patricia Briggs (Mercy Thompson #7)

library

Synopsis from Goodreads
Mercy Thompson returns in the seventh novel in the #1 New York Times bestselling series.

Mercy Thompson’s life has undergone a seismic change. Becoming the mate of Adam Hauptman—the charismatic Alpha of the local werewolf pack—has made her a stepmother to his daughter Jesse, a relationship that brings moments of blissful normalcy to Mercy’s life. But on the edges of humanity, what passes for a minor mishap on an ordinary day can turn into so much more…

After an accident in bumper-to-bumper traffic, Mercy and Jesse can’t reach Adam—or anyone else in the pack for that matter. They’ve all been abducted.

Through their mating bond, all Mercy knows is that Adam is angry and in pain. With the werewolves fighting a political battle to gain acceptance from the public, Mercy fears Adam’s disappearance may be related—and that he and the pack are in serious danger. Outclassed and on her own, Mercy may be forced to seek assistance from any ally she can get, no matter how unlikely.

Frost Burned was definitely better than River Marked but it still felt like something was lacking.  I don't know if it's me who grew out of this series like I did with Kelley Armstrong or simply the books just winding down?  I do enjoy Mercy and Adam's relationship, and this book while it felt short was jammed full of action on Mercy's behalf. Liked it but didn't like it enough.

Iced by Karen Marie Moning (Dani O'Malley #1)

bought

Synopsis from Goodreads
From #1 New York Times bestselling author Karen Marie Moning comes the first book in her hotly anticipated new urban paranormal trilogy, set in the world of her blockbuster Fever series.

The year is 1 AWC—After the Wall Crash. The Fae are free and hunting us. It’s a war zone out there, and no two days are alike. I’m Dani O’Malley, the chaos-filled streets of Dublin are my home, and there’s no place I’d rather be.

Dani “Mega” O’Malley plays by her own set of rules—and in a world overrun by Dark Fae, her biggest rule is: Do what it takes to survive. Possessing rare talents and the all-powerful Sword of Light, Dani is more than equipped for the task. In fact, she’s one of the rare humans who can defend themselves against the Unseelie. But now, amid the pandemonium, her greatest gifts have turned into serious liabilities.

Dani’s ex–best friend, MacKayla Lane, wants her dead, the terrifying Unseelie princes have put a price on her head, and Inspector Jayne, the head of the police force, is after her sword and will stop at nothing to get it. What’s more, people are being mysteriously frozen to death all over the city, encased on the spot in sub-zero, icy tableaux.

When Dublin’s most seductive nightclub gets blanketed in hoarfrost, Dani finds herself at the mercy of Ryodan, the club’s ruthless, immortal owner. He needs her quick wit and exceptional skill to figure out what’s freezing Fae and humans dead in their tracks—and Ryodan will do anything to ensure her compliance.

Dodging bullets, fangs, and fists, Dani must strike treacherous bargains and make desperate alliances to save her beloved Dublin—before everything and everyone in it gets iced.

Amazing and full of possibilities. I admit I had my doubts about the unlikely duo of Ryodan and Dani, but I enjoyed the hell out of them. Dani is sassy and vulnerable and Ryodan is just as an inscrutable cold bastard as ever. The story arc holds our attention until the very end, and while Christian was creeping me out, Dancer for example added much needed human touch and softness to the plot. Highly recommended non-stop action. Worth every penny.

The Queen Is Dead (The Immortal Empire #2)

library

Synopsis from Goodreads

Nothing lasts forever---and immortality isn't all its cracked up to be.

When her brother Val gets in over his head in an investigation of Half-Blood disappearances and goes missing himself, it's up to Xandra, newly crowned Goblin Queen, to get him back and bring the atrocities to light. Xandra must frequent the seediest parts of London, while also coping with what she is, the political factions vying for her favor, and the all too-close scrutiny of Queen Victoria, who wants her head. Add this to being a suspect in a murder investigation, a werewolf boyfriend with demands of his own, and a mother hell bent on destroying the monarchy, and Xandra barely knows which way is up. One thing she does know is that she's already lost one sibling, she's not about to lose another.

This is a really good steampunk series, peeps. What happened after God Save The Queen is pretty fascinating because Xandra has no choice but to embrace her nature as a monster and acts in a very different way. The book moves at a fast pace, it's very vibrant and bloodthirsty, and you read it with pure gleeful joy. Recommended.

Contemporary Fantasy Review: The She-Hulk Diaries by Marta Acosta

The She-Hulk Diaries by Marta Acosta

Egalley courtesy of Hyperion

Synopsis from Goodreads
JANUARY 1
CURRENT STATUS: No job, no boyfriend, no permanent place to live, no car, and most of my clothes are held together with staples and duct tape. Bank account almost wiped out. Many of my former associates have expressed a desire that I never darken their doorways again for legal and financial reasons.

She-Hulk got us got us kicked out of the Avengers Mansion. People keep posting videos online of her New Year's Eve shenanigans: twirling, flaming telephone poles in Times Square, climbing the Empire State Building while dangling Anderson Cooper, dancing wildly at parties, and commandeering a motorcycle cop's ride to do wheelies across the Brooklyn Bridge.

Saying there are two sides to Jennifer Walters's personality is an understatement. When she hasn't morphed into a 650-pound, crime-fighting, hard-partying superhero, she's a single lawyer trying to get her act together. Hilarious and action-packed, The She-Hulk Diaries tells her story, as she juggles looking for Mr. Right and climbing the corporate ladder by day with battling villains and saving the world by night. Maybe she'll finally take on a case that will define her career. Maybe she won't meet one Mr. Right, but two, and she'll have to choose. Maybe bad guys will stop trying to destroy the planet so she can read her Perez Hilton in peace.

"An absolute delight. Those who are unfamiliar with Bruce Banner's wayward cousin are in for a treat . . . Whether you like She-Hulk straight up, comedic, or a combination of both, The She-Hulk Diaries is the She-Hulk endeavor for you." --Peter David, long-time writer of The Incredible Hulk, She-Hulk, and X-Factor and author of Pulling Up Stakes

I  find it really amusing that every time Marta writes a new book the reviews go extremely polar from hate to love. The reason is that she has a very specific writing style and sense of humour, so you either like her or not.

I adore Marta's books. Every single one. She is hilarious, extravagant and very nerdy. What's not to love? And The She-Hulk Diaries is Marta at her best.

Post-Apocalyptic YA Review: Vampire Miami by Phil Tucker

Vampire Miami by Phil Tucker (The Human Revolt #1)

review request from the author

Five years ago, the war ended and Miami was given to the vampires. Five years ago, the US turned its back on those trapped behind the Wall – and life in the vampire kingdom has degenerated into a grisly struggle for survival.

When naive and impulsive Selah Brown leaves Brooklyn to search for her father in the dead heart of the vampire city, she discovers that nothing is as it was explained to the American public—and her search is subverted into a quest to expose the truth before the horrors of the city can claim her.

I remember how much I enjoyed reading Throne by Phil Tucker last year. Vampire Miami was just as enjoyable. In fact it was so enjoyable that I went on Amazon and bought and read book #2 straight away.

The thing is, Phil Tucker had guts to do something Julie Kagawa couldn't or wouldn't do with Allison in her Blood of Eden series. He had no qualms creating a monster.

The Postman Knock #34

Still raining this week... They are promising at least 10 more years of wet miserable summers in the news. Good that I'm not going to put up with it, right? *wink*
Now, the good news is that I've ordered a pair of glasses for myself. I am very near-sighted (in my own words, blind as a bat) so this will be a relief. Besides I quite like how I look in them. You'll see :)

How has your week been?

I've READ:

You can say I've been shirking my duties for the whole week because I read purely for myself. nothing from my review pile. Peeps, I can't tell you just how good FORGING ZERO and ZERO RECALL were. My brain exploded. Such good military sci-fi! KINGDOM OF GODS on the other hand was the weakest book in the series, and I felt slightly let down by the author. Then it went from bad to worse. MESSENGER'S ANGEL was a total fail for me. Ridiculous plotwise and characterwise. I pretty much skimmed it through. Got tired of the eye rolling as well. At last, INSATIABLE was a pretty decent and fun read. I don't know why there are so many reviews bashing it?  This is typical Meg Cabot - light and entertaining. She's got nice sense of humor when she is not writing that terrible paranormal YA series, - Abandon.

NETGALLEY:

Really looking forward to reading this psychological thriller.

BOUGHT:

Both were £0.77 on Kindle this week!

LIBRARY:

I'm going through my library wishlist right now to clear it of old books. Hence so many requests in the last few weeks.

This is it. Here is the cutest video and have an awesome day!
Ciao!

I just love the look of her hair, the dress and typography - this cover is perfect!

It's no brainer really. Photoshop at its worst.
Even if this book is really good, I will never buy it. It makes my teeth ache just by looking at it :(

What are your picks?

In case of zombie apocalypse

Hey, guys! I feel like I should say this just in case :)
If you'd like to sponsor a fellow book addict who sometimes can't sleep at night worrying that she won't have enough books to read if internet goes down in the event of zombie apocalypse (I'm convinced it's one of the top five ways to go for human race) you can donate through Paypal to olivesandacorns at gmail dot com or buy a book through any of the links provided with my reviews which will send me a small percentage from the sale. All proceeds will go towards my enormous TBR. I will also shelter you on the remote farm in Portugal when zombie apocalypse starts provided you survive getting there. There will be books, yay?
Thank you! Love you all
