Neanderthal Seeks Human: A Smart Romance by Penny Reid (Knitting in The City #1)

bought

Synopsis from Goodreads
There are three things you need to know about Janie Morris: 1) She is incapable of engaging in a conversation without volunteering TMTI (Too Much Trivial Information), especially when she is unnerved, 2) No one unnerves her more than Quinn Sullivan, and 3) She doesn't know how to knit.

After losing her boyfriend, apartment, and job in the same day, Janie Morris can't help wondering what new torment fate has in store. To her utter mortification, Quinn Sullivan- aka Sir McHotpants- witnesses it all then keeps turning up like a pair of shoes you lust after but can't afford. The last thing she expects is for Quinn- the focus of her slightly, albeit harmless, stalkerish tendencies- to make her an offer she can't refuse.

9.5/10

Look at the rating, my dear readers, and ask yourself how often do I rate anything beyond 8.5/10? The answer is: not very often. This book is worth it 10 times over.

It's absolutely hilarious, clever, hot and romantic. Penny Reid's debut instantly made me fall in love with her whimsical, satirical writing, and even worse now I'm craving for more and question myself: was I living under a rock not to read this fabulous book before?

In fact, if you are a fan of Marta Acosta, this will be very similar to her in writing style.

“She said I owned the clothes of a radiologist and the shoes of an OBGYN; which is like the medical doctor equivalent of saying that I dressed like a librarian with a propensity of fuckmeboots.”

Janie is a klutzy and very cute, clueless girl with an unhealthy fascination with trivia, but she is also a genius accountant with an insane attention to details (her brain just works differently), so when she breaks up with her boyfriend, loses her apartment and her place in his rich daddy's firm, she really doesn't know what to do with her life until the fascinating security guy who escorts her from the premises, starts taking an interest in her life.

Don't take me wrong, she is capable of taking care of herself. It's just she doesn't give that impression to the people who don't know her really well and she is really closed off emotionally. That's why hot and confident in himself Quinn keeps getting confused and flabbergasted by troublesome Miss Morris and his reaction to her. She just doesn't fit the slot, and she actively tries to prevent it. Much hilarity and confusion later, this story ends on a delightfully romantic note, which makes a reader want to hug the book (or in my case, kindle) and sigh ever so happily. Very much recommended.

Penny Reid has difficulty writing about herself in the third person. She finds it strange and unsettling. Therefore, Penny will now switch to the first person.

I'm originally from California but now live in the Southeast US with my family. I work full time in the biotech industry as a researcher. I work a lot. I'm also a full time mom to two diminutive adults (boy-5 and girl-3), wife, daughter, knitter, crocheter, sewer, general crafter, and thought hijacker.

I don't like to sit still unless I'm writing, reading, or knitting and I usually only knit in my knitting group... or at red lights while stuck in traffic. I only read on planes (where I'm trapped). Luckily, I travel a lot for work.

The voices in my head (characters) became so loud over the summer of 2012- specifically, Janie Morris- that I was forced to write Neanderthal Seeks Human, my first attempt at a full length novel. It took me 7 months.

If I could have any job in the world it would be my job because I feel like what I do makes a tangible difference in the lives of every living person. If I could have any life in the world it would be my life. Happiness is the seed of good fortune and success. Do what it takes to be happy and be a source of happiness for others.

Summary
Friends Without Benefits can be read as a standalone, is a full length 120k word novel, and is book#2 in the Knitting in the City Series.

There are three things you need to know about Elizabeth Finney: 1) She suffers from severe sarcastic syndrome, especially when she's unnerved, 2) No one unnerves her like Nico Manganiello, and 3) She knows how to knit.

Elizabeth Finney is almost always right about everything: the musical merits of boy bands are undervalued by society, “benefits” with human Ken dolls are better without friendship, and the sun has set on her once-in-a-lifetime chance for true love. But when Elizabeth’s plans for benefits without friendship are disarmed by the irritatingly charismatic and chauvinistic Nico Manganiello- her former nemesis- she finds herself struggling to maintain the electric fence around her heart while avoiding electrocution or, worse, falling in love.
