Urban Fantasy Review: Ashes of Honor by Seanan McGuire

Ashes of Honor by Seanan McGuire (October Daye #6)

Synopsis from Goodreads
It’s been almost a year since October “Toby” Daye averted a war, gave up a county, and suffered personal losses that have left her wishing for a good day’s sleep. She’s tried to focus on her responsibilities—training Quentin, upholding her position as Sylvester’s knight, and paying the bills—but she can’t help feeling like her world is crumbling around her, and her increasingly reckless behavior is beginning to worry even her staunchest supporters.

To make matters worse, Toby’s just been asked to find another missing child…only this time it’s the changeling daughter of her fellow knight, Etienne, who didn’t even know he was a father until the girl went missing. Her name is Chelsea. She’s a teleporter, like her father. She’s also the kind of changeling the old stories warn about, the ones with all the strength and none of the control. She’s opening doors that were never meant to be opened, releasing dangers that were sealed away centuries before—and there’s a good chance she could destroy Faerie if she isn’t stopped.

Now Toby must find Chelsea before time runs out, racing against an unknown deadline and through unknown worlds as she and her allies try to avert disaster. But danger is also stirring in the Court of Cats, and Tybalt may need Toby’s help with the biggest challenge he’s ever faced.

Toby thought the last year was bad. She has no idea.

There is virtually no point saying that I love Seanan McGuire to bits. Every damn book of hers I read ends up with high marks. For me she is everything urban fantasy genre should strive to: high octane plot driven story, strong characters and an in depth world-building.

She has it all and she makes every book better and better than the previous one.

After heartbreaking ending of book #5 Toby Day has a short period of quiet before the storm so she can grieve. However, she gets a plea for help from the last person she would have expected to mess up, and what looks like a simple mission turns into save-the-world-try-not-to-die-in-the-process affair. Her usual type.

Not only that, the circumstances are eery similar to what happened to Toby's own daughter, and she is forced to deal with her emotional issues and her attraction to Tybalt as well. So you can say that book #6 is a turning point as it's full of revelations.

The plot is incredibly intense because Toby and Tybalt are both forced to jump between fae dimensions to find a missing girl who wreaks havoc in fae worlds and is unable to stop on her own. By doing that she is wearing off the foundations of fae magic, which holds everything together, and Toby has to stop her if she wants the world to stay as it is.

It's a fantastic read which I devoured in one go. I highly recommend this book and all the other books in the series to any fan of urban fantasy or anyone wanting to try and read something in this genre.

I haven't read any in this series but their on my TBR list. I absolutely LOVED the Newsflesh trilogy by Mira Grant, Seanan McGuire's alterego, which also has fantastic world building and serious intensity.

I've said this before, and I'll damn well say it again, but I am SO glad every time you give these books high marks, because The Newsflesh Trilogy is pretty much my favorite thing ever in the world. I'm so glad to know that just because she used a different name, she's equally awesome in both places!

In case of zombie apocalypse

Hey, guys! I feel like I should say this just in case :)
If you'd like to sponsor a fellow book addict who sometimes can't sleep at night worrying that she won't have enough books to read if internet goes down in the event of zombie apocalypse (I'm convinced it's one of the top five ways to go for human race) you can donate through Paypal to olivesandacorns at gmail dot com or buy a book through any of the links provided with my reviews which will send me a small percentage from the sale. All proceeds will go towards my enormous TBR. I will also shelter you on the remote farm in Portugal when zombie apocalypse starts provided you survive getting there. There will be books, yay?
Thank you! Love you all
