Synopsis from Goodreads
In a magical land ruled by ruthless Elven lords, the Fire Lord's son, Dominic Raikes, plays a deadly game to conceal his growing might from his malevolent father—until his arranged bride awakens in him passions he thought he had buried forever.

Lady Cassandra has been raised in outward purity and innocence, while secretly being trained as an assassin. Her mission is to bring down the Elven Lord and his champion son. But when she gets to court, she discovers that nothing is what it seems, least of all the man she married.

But beneath the gilded castles lies an unspeakable evil, greater than either Dominic or Cassandra had ever fathomed, and without each other they may not survive.

The Fire Lord's Lover has been on my wishlist for absolute ages because of the unique premise of this book, - alternative history, 18th century England, where mad  Elven Lords rule 7 separate realms. Magic, court poisons, intrigues, and hello? Assassins. Need I say more?

Review: A Spy in the House by Y.S.Lee

A Spy in the House by Y.S.Lee (The Agency #1)

bought

Synopsis  from Goodreads
Introducing an exciting new series! Steeped in Victorian atmosphere and intrigue, this diverting mystery trails a feisty heroine as she takes on a precarious secret assignment.

Rescued from the gallows in 1850s London, young orphan (and thief) Mary Quinn is surprised to be offered a singular education, instruction in fine manners — and an unusual vocation. Miss Scrimshaw’s Academy for Girls is a cover for an all-female investigative unit called The Agency, and at seventeen, Mary is about to put her training to the test. Assuming the guise of a lady’s companion, she must infiltrate a rich merchant’s home in hopes of tracing his missing cargo ships. But the household is full of dangerous deceptions, and there is no one to trust — or is there? Packed with action and suspense, banter and romance, and evoking the gritty backstreets of Victorian London, this breezy mystery debuts a daring young detective who lives by her wits while uncovering secrets — including those of her own past.

Review: Babylon Steel by Gaie Sebold

Babylon Steel by Gaie Sebold

won from The Qwillery

So when the mysterious Darask Fain offers her a job finding a missing girl, Babylon decides to take it. But the missing girl is not what she seems, and neither is Darask Fain. Babylon Steel is a debut work of a British author Gaie Sebold and as far as genres go, - difficult to slide in a certain slot. It's a fantasy, but there are portals which allow all sorts of creatures to travel from world to world, so maybe it's sci-fi as well, but what's important, - it's a fantastic book!

Review: After The Golden Age by Carrie Vaughn

After The Golden Age by Carrie Vaughn

bought

Synopsis from Goodreads
Can an accountant defeat a supervillain? Celia West, only daughter of the heroic leaders of the superpowered Olympiad, has spent the past few years estranged from her parents and their high-powered lifestyle. She’s had enough of masks and heroics, and wants only to live her own quiet life out from under the shadow of West Plaza and her rich and famous parents.

Then she is called into her boss’ office and told that as the city’s top forensic accountant, Celia is the best chance the prosecution has to catch notorious supervillain the Destructor for tax fraud. In the course of the trial, Celia’s troubled past comes to light and family secrets are revealed as the rift between Celia and her parents grows deeper. Cut off from friends and family, Celia must come to terms with the fact that she might just be Commerce City’s only hope.

This all-new and moving story of love, family, and sacrifice is an homage to Golden Age comics that no fan will want to miss.

It's no secret that the past few books by Carrie Vaughn I read I was disappointed with, but this glorious novel restored my faith in her writing talent.

Seriously, this book was absolutely fantastic. Think of Hancock and The Watchmen. It's surreal, full of life and very grounded. This is not a story about a cloaked and masked super men and women, this is Celia's story.

I absolutely loved these two novellas! Extremely easy and entertaining read, time just flew by.

Celaena Sardothien is one of my favourite types of heroine - she's got pluck and skill to back it up. Arrogant, sarcastic assassin extraordinaire she manages to stay true to her heart or die trying.

Early Review: The Peculiars by Maureen Doyle McQuerry

The Peculiars by Maureen Doyle McQuerry

Egalley thanks to Abrams

This dark and thrilling adventure, with an unforgettable heroine, will captivate fans of steampunk, fantasy, and romance. On the train she meets a young librarian, Jimson Quiggley, who is traveling to a town on the edge of Scree to work in the home and library of the inventor Mr. Beasley. The train is stopped by men being chased by the handsome young marshal Thomas Saltre. When Saltre learns who Lena’s father is, he convinces her to spy on Mr. Beasley and the strange folk who disappear into his home, Zephyr House. A daring escape in an aerocopter leads Lena into the wilds of Scree to confront her deepest fears.

Well, I'll keep my review short on this one as I don't have much to say.

First of all, I understand now why they needed to change the cover, because this book needs all the sellable points it could get. However don't be misled, - Lena is not blond and she doesn't have chicken wings. Her Pecular trait is goblinism - long hands and long feet.
