Partials by Dan Wells EARLY REVIEW

Partials by Dan Wells (Partials #1)

Egalley thanks to HarperTEEN

Synopsis from Goodreads
The human race is all but extinct after a war with Partials—engineered organic beings identical to humans—has decimated the population. Reduced to tens of thousands by RM, a weaponized virus to which only a fraction of humanity is immune, the survivors in North America have huddled together on Long Island while the Partials have mysteriously retreated. The threat of the Partials is still imminent, but worse, no baby has been born immune to RM in more than a decade. Our time is running out.

Kira, a sixteen-year-old medic in training, is on the front lines of this battle, seeing RM ravage the community while mandatory pregnancy laws threaten to launch what’s left of humanity into civil war, and she’s not content to stand by and watch. But as she makes a desperate decision to save the last of her race, she will discover that the survival of humans and Partials alike rests in her attempts to uncover the connections between them—connections that humanity has forgotten, or perhaps never even knew were there.

Dan Wells, acclaimed author of I Am Not a Serial Killer, takes readers on a pulse-pounding journey into a world where the very concept of what it means to be human is in question—one where our humanity is both our greatest liability and our only hope for survival.

I'm on the fence about this book. I liked it, and at the same time I wished it rose up to the challenge of characterisation and world-building as I'm not a big fan of a sketchy world and oversimplified characters.

Blood Bound by Rachel Vincent REVIEW

Blood Bound by Rachel Vincent (Unbound #1)

library copy

Synopsis from Goodreads
Bound by blood, condemned by fate

As a bloodtracker, Liv is extremely powerful. And in a world where power is a commodity that can get you killed, Liv's learnt to survive by her own rules.

Rule number one? Trust no one.

But when a friend's daughter goes missing, Liv is bound by a potent magical oath. She can't rest until the child is safe.
And that means trusting her dangerous ex, Cam.

A sinister prophecy tells that she and Cam will be the death of each other, yet Liv's tired of being a slave to destiny. She's ready to play the forces controlling her world at their own game.

No matter what the cost.

Pretty intense and gritty, this book will certainly make all the fans of Rachel's Shifters series happy. In fact, Cam reminded me of Marc because of his sheer stubbornness and inability to let go. *grinning*

This is book #2, it looks like fantasy, and I haven't read book #1... but I'll give it a go anyway. Thank you, Berkley UK!

Karin Harlow's Enemy Lover, book #1 was very much urban fantasy rather than pure paranormal romance, and I liked that enough to go for a book #2, which has been on my wishlist for ages :)

Straight to Hell by Michelle Scott REVIEW

Straight to Hell by Michelle Scott (Lilith Straight #1)

review requested by the author

Synopsis from Goodreads
The moment Lilith Straight dies, the Devil appears to claim her soul and cash in on a family curse. Now, Lilith has no choice but to work for him. The job is bad, the boss is worse and she can’t imagine how she’ll explain her new reincarnation to her eight-year-old daughter. But then an arrogant, yet oh so yummy, incubus shows up…and hell heats up just a little more.

Don't pay attention to the unfortunate cover, this book is funny, smart and sad at the same time, and certainly worth your time.

It works, simply because each of us can relate to Lilith. She is thirty something, recently divorced, saddled with a daughter whom she loves dearly, a distantly related hellion niece who accidentally burned her house, and a beautiful step-sister, who can't grow up and get a job.

The Black Hawk by Joanna Bourne REVIEW

He is her enemy.
He is her lover.
He is her only hope.

Adrian wanted the treacherous beauty known as "Owl" back in his bed, but not wounded and clinging to life. Now, as he helps her heal, the two must learn to trust each other to confront the hidden menace that's trying to kill them—and survive long enough to explore the passion simmering between them once again.

I've said it time and again, - Joanna Bourne is incredible. Her books are pure poetry, philosophical, deep, melancholic and immensely romantic. She also put huge amount of research in the subject - French Revolution and Napoleon's Empire.

Artists Behind The Covers #4 - Gene Mollica and Craig White

I haven't done this feature for a while, so here we go...

I'm sure you've seen his work all over your favorite urban fantasy books. Gene's also responsible for yummy The Iron Druid Chronicles covers, even for the last one which is so different from the first three, I honestly thought it was done by a different artist :)

He's been in the industry since 1993 and worked with such big shots like Sherrilyn Kenyon and Laurell K. Hamilton among others. You can not miss his covers. They are always super hot :)

You can find more cover artists on the page Monthly Features.

Blood Will Tell, Pearl Savage and Ascent SHORT REVIEWS

Blood Will Tell by Samantha Young (Warriors of Ankh #1)

bought

Synopsis from Goodreads
Eden is a Soul Eater. While that hasn’t meant much to her in the past, she’s pretty sure any minute now she’s going to go all "Carrie" on her eleventh grade class.

Noah is an Ankh. As an immortal Warrior, his purpose in life is to hunt down and kill Soul Eaters.

Eden is Noah’s next assignment. Problem is… this is an assignment with a difference. Eden’s not your average, run of the mill, Soul Eater. Noah’s job? To test Eden for possible redemption.

It’s a risky business.

Especially if Noah awakens Eden’s inner monster.

It would be kind of hard for Eden to listen to the angel on her shoulder when the devil on the other is telling her, her new best friend is a lying, scheming, immortal enemy...

....betrayal is such a bitch.

So is Eden when you get on her bad side.

Excellent writing, interesting mythology, much promise, but the characters have virtually no time to develop as the book is very short with an abrupt ending. I would certainly read more by this author, I just wished she didn't change the covers of this particular book so many times. I loved the boy on the cover, but now he's been replaced by a generic girl in a dress. Not cool.

Kushiel's Chosen by Jacqueline Carey REVIEW

Kushiel's Chosen (Kushiel: Phèdre's Trilogy #2)

bought

Synopsis from Goodreads
Following hard on the heels of Kushiel's Dart, Jacqueline Carey's spectacular debut novel, comes Kushiel's Chosen, a glittering and riveting historical fantasy.

The land of Terre d'Ange is a place of unsurpassed beauty and grace. It is said that the angels found the land and saw it was good, and the ensuing race that rose from the seed of angels and men live by one simple rule: Love as thou wilt.

Phèdre nó Delaunay is a young woman who was born with a scarlet mote in her left eye and sold into indentured servitude as a child. Her bond was purchased by Anafiel Delaunay, a nobleman with a very special mission--and the first to recognize her for who and what she is: one pricked by Kushiel's Dart, chosen to forever experience pain and pleasure as one.
Phèdre has trained in the courtly arts and the talents of the bedchamber, but, above all, the ability to observe, remember, and analyze. Having stumbled upon a plot that threatened the very foundations of her homeland, she gave up almost everything she held dear to save it. She survived, and lived to have others tell her story, and if they embellished the tale with fabric of mythical splendor, they weren't far off the mark.

The hands of the gods weigh heavily upon Phèdre's brow, and they are not yet done with their charge--for while the young queen who sits upon the throne is well loved by the people, there are those who believe that other heads should wear the crown. And those who escaped the wrath of the mighty are not yet done with their schemes for power and revenge. To protect and serve, Phèdre will once again leave her beloved homeland.

From the sun-drenched villas of La Serenissima to the wilds of old Hellas, from a prison designed to drive the very gods mad to an island of immutable joy. Phèdre will meet old friends and new enemies and discover a plot so dreadful as to make the earth tremble, masterminded by the one person she cannot turn away from.

According to Tor, Carey's first book Kushiel's Dart is one of the best fantasy novels of the last decade.

Frankly speaking, I agree. I've never read anything quite like that before. Kushiel's Dart blew me away, and Kushiel's Chosen with its 700+ pages was not far behind. It's extremely intricate, intense, darkly erotic and has layers upon layers of meaning. It celebrates feminine strength, because most of the main players in this series be that villains or heroes are women.

The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater REVIEW

The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater

library copy

Synopsis from Goodreads
It happens at the start of every November: the Scorpio Races. Riders attempt to keep hold of their water horses long enough to make it to the finish line.

Some riders live.
Others die.

At age nineteen, Sean Kendrick is the returning champion. He is a young man of few words, and if he has any fears, he keeps them buried deep, where no one else can see them.

Puck Connolly is different. She never meant to ride in the Scorpio Races. But fate hasn't given her much of a chance. So she enters the competition — the first girl ever to do so. She is in no way prepared for what is going to happen.

I'm always amazed at how well Maggie's writing can grab you and drag you along the plot with the main characters. It's so alive, so grounded, vivid with smells and sounds and tastes so real that you feel like you are there in the eye of the storm, small and terrified.

IMM #21, and by the way this winter is a total fail!

This winter is a total fail, me dears. There is no snow, there is no frost, there is just plenty of bloody rain. In other words, I don't feel the seasons change here in UK at all :)
Hope it's not the sign of upcoming apocalypse, but just a quirck of nature.

Here is what I have in my mailbox...
