The Postman Knock #4

Hi, folks!

Hopefully by the time you are reading this I'm away for a long weekend to Brighton (as in UK, not US!).
I'm praying that the hot weather will hold and I'll be meeting my old friends, having nice meals and catching up on everything that's happened like mad.

Not much on the bookish front this weekend...

Egalleys
Thanks to Edelweiss and Simon & Schuster! Both books have been on my wishlist and I'm very exited to read them.

Notice
Last Sunday I said that August would be my month for catching up on reading my paperbacks.
Not only that, I've decided that I will not be accepting or requesting ebooks for review until I go through my present backlog, and I also won't buy any ebooks or paperbacks until I'm down to the last 10 of them in total.
It's a huge decision, but my buying habit spiralled out of control in the last few months and I have to reduce my TBR pile to a more manageable size as I'm not reading as fast as I did last year anymore. Be that my new job at fault or my general tiredness in the end of the day, but the fact is I add 6 to 12 books to my actual TBR pile every week and read only about 3 of them, and I'm very unhappy about the current ratio.

So far I have 85 books (18 of which are my review copies). If I reduce them to 10 by November, I'll be ecstatic.

So, hello new resolution!
Anyone wants to join in?

I will still feature the occasional book on Sunday and will be telling you about my progress and reading highlights of the week, if that's alright with you, guys?

I'm leaving you with another fabulous video from TED where musician plays the audience.
This is unbelievably beautiful and makes you smile...

In this fun, 3-min performance from the World Science Festival, musician Bobby McFerrin uses the pentatonic scale to reveal one surprising result of the way our brains are wired.
Listening to Bobby McFerrin sing may be hazardous to your preconceptions. Side effects may include unparalleled joy, a new perspective on creativity, rejection of the predictable, and a sudden, irreversible urge to lead a more spontaneous existence.

Happy Sunday!

  1. A TBR pile of only 85 books!? Hahahaaa!!! That is something I can only dream of! :-P
And obviously I am totally ignoring my plan not to buy more than 12 books a month *drops head on desk*. Let's see ... I bought 19 physical books (I've read one of those so far) and 12 eBooks (I already read six which is actually pretty good). Of course it was agreed upon that eBooks don't really count in the grand scheme of things, but I'm still 7 books over those 12, sooo maybe if I only buy 5 in August? Hmmm ...

  2. It is so easy to buy books quicker than you read - that's been my problem as well!! That's also been the reason I wanted to stop buying any books as well. Good luck to you and lets hope we both have slightly smaller TBR piles come September...

  4. Oh you only have 85 books, I have like 170 books and I don't even count the ebooks lol. It's terrific.I confess I buy like 2 books each time I read one. so not a good thing.

  6. Oh, my friend, I hear you loudly about the TBR pile and the adding of books to it at a scary pace. I went a little out of control with book buying lately and this is AFTER I brought home 20 books from BEA. I'm almost in the triple-digits of unread books and I stopped accepting books for review at the start of the year (doesn't stop a few from showing up randomly though. Those ones make me feel guilty if I don't actually want them. :()

Feel free to still post ebook deals since I now stalk your blog for those since we let an ereader enter our home. I have yet to use it for anything other than reading 3 book previews (1 chapter each), but you know, it's still living with us. ;) I get all my great UF/fantasy recs from you!

  7. There's a Brighton in the US? Is it also a gay capital?

Good luck with your resolution. I shan't be joining you because every now and then buying books cheers me up a little, whether I'll read them or not they make for an awesome little bedroom library. I am, however, being a lot more harsh on myself regarding accepting review copies.

  8. I hope you're having a fun weekend!

Your goals are ambitious but reasonable. Good luck with them. I should do something similar as I'm way behind.

  9. That's a good plan! :) Present situation considered, I also don't have time to read as much as I want to anymore. I hope I can resist clicking the "request" button though, especially when I see a book I really want to read. Haha!

  10. Good luck on getting through your piles! I need to have a go at this too...It really is satisfying saying "I can get rid of this one now and I shall have space!"

  12. Birgit, well... I just can't keep adding yummy new books to my shelf and keep neglecting them. My reviews are also suffering because I do not review books for at least couple of weeks after I've read them. It just doesn't work well for me.

Mel, let's hope so. I'll be cheering for your book ban as well.

Blodeuedd, I'm just under 100 books behind on my goodreads challenge, so I hope to place these 75 books into it :)

Melliane, I can't wait to read it! Hope it's amazing!

  13. I feel you Cat! I don't want to get into triple digits and that's why I'm doing it. Don't worry, I'll still be posting about new books and deals.

Han, I give myself until November with all this, but I completely understand how a book here and there cheers you up. it does the same for me! ;)

Bea, sweetie, come and join me if you want! ;)

Eva, I totally understand. I'm very much the same. We all are.

Nina, Melissa, thank you! I'll be posting updates every week :)
