Synopsis from Goodreads
"With her knack for being in trouble's way, Sookie witnesses the firebombing of Merlotte's, the bar where she works. Since Sam Merlotte is now known to be two-natured, suspicion falls immediately on the anti-shifters in the area. But Sookie suspects otherwise and she and Sam work together to uncover the culprit - and the twisted motive for the attack. But her attention is divided. Though she can't 'read' vampires, Sookie knows her lover Eric Northman and his 'child' Pam well - and she realises that they are plotting to kill the vampire who is now their master. Gradually, she is drawn into the plot -which is much more complicated than she knows. Caught up in the politics of the vampire world, Sookie will learn that she is as much of a pawn as any ordinary human - and that there is a new Queen on the board . . . "

This was one of The Southern Vampires books that felt bittersweet to me. It's all about crossroads, hard choices and letting go of your illusions. It wasn't long enough to my liking and I thought it ended rather abruptly.

I do so much prefer book Sookie to TV series Sookie, in fact I can't stand TV Sookie. She is so very different to what I see in the books.

Charlaine Harris's Sookie is decisive. She decides to do something and she brutally executes it, however hurt she may be. She doesn't go back on her words. She is no stupid or naive, more kindhearted and willing to see good in other people before seeing their bad side.

She is also very unfortunate with her men. To my utter disappointment Eric behaved like a jerk in this book, and I do feel like the couple is about to break up. It was not going well for both of them with a major obstacle on Eric's side. Such a pity, because they did have some sweet moments together.

Poor Pam is not herself in this book going through very hard times. There are machinations from fae side of Sookie's family, some unpleasant revelations from the past and an unexpected enemy.

I did feel for Sookie, she wasn't her usual perky self. It was a sad book and feel that something major is going to happen in the next installment of the series. Didn't Charlaine say that there will be 2 more books and that's it?

I do want a happy end for Sookie but I can't see it happening.

  1. I felt like this book isn't up to par with the others. BUt I agree the TV series has nothing on the books! Great review. Glad to meet a fellow Sookie fan! :)
