Tangled Threads by Jennifer Estep review

Tangled Threads by Jennifer Estep (Elemental Assassin #4)

Synopsis from Goodreads
I’d rather face a dozen lethal assassins any night than deal with something as tricky, convoluted, and fragile as my feelings.

But here I am. Gin Blanco, the semi-retired assassin known as the Spider. Hovering outside sexy businessman Owen Grayson’s front door like a nervous teenage girl. One thing I like about Owen: he doesn’t shy away from my past—or my present. And right now I have a bull’s-eye on my forehead.

Cold-blooded Fire elemental Mab Monroe has hired one of the smartest assassins in the business to trap me. Elektra LaFleur is skilled and efficient, with deadly electrical elemental magic as potent as my own Ice and Stone powers. Which means there’s a fifty-fifty chance one of us won’t survive this battle. I intend to kill LaFleur—or die trying—because Mab wants the assassin to take out my baby sister, Detective Bria Coolidge, too.

The only problem is, Bria has no idea I’m her long-lost sibling . . . or that I’m the murderer she’s been chasing through Ashland for weeks. And what Bria doesn’t know just might get us both dead. . . .

This will be a short review.

I love Jennifer Estep, but last book's batmanesque finale was really hard to beat. So for me, this book was something of a book between books - it fills the gaps and ties the loose ends. The action is sporadic, a lot of the book repeats things that Gin has done or in the habit of doing every day. There are a lot of talks with Owen Grayson, whom I adored in the previous book when he met Gin. There is an honest conversation (at last!) with Bria...

The fight against Elektra LeFleur - a diabolical assassin whom Mab Monroe hired in an attempt to get rid of The Spider is very interesting, and for me it was the highlight of the book (the fight scenes are always marvelous). However I would have loved to see Owen and Finn being a bit more active. At least, Finn gets to shoot his big gun :) but Owen just sits at home like a proper housewife and accepts everything that Gin dishes out. I wanted some sparks flying, some tension coming from adjustment to each other, but it was all so mellow...

Otherwise, this is another excellent installment in the series, plus judging from the beginning of the next book, Gin will have a hell of a ride.

8.5/10
