Wildefire by Karsten Knight
Egalley thanks to Simon & Schuster
Synopsis from Goodreads
Every flame begins with a spark.
Ashline Wilde is having a rough sophomore year. She’s struggling to find her place as the only Polynesian girl in school, her boyfriend just cheated on her, and now her runaway sister, Eve, has decided to barge back into her life. When Eve’s violent behavior escalates and she does the unthinkable, Ash transfers to a remote private school nestled in California’s redwoods, hoping to put the tragedy behind her. But her fresh start at Blackwood Academy doesn’t go as planned. Just as Ash is beginning to enjoy the perks of her new school—being captain of the tennis team, a steamy romance with a hot, local park ranger—Ash discovers that a group of gods and goddesses have mysteriously enrolled at Blackwood…and she’s one of them. To make matters worse, Eve has resurfaced to haunt Ash, and she’s got some strange abilities of her own. With a war between the gods looming over campus, Ash must master the new fire smoldering within before she clashes with her sister one more time… And when warm and cold fronts collide, there’s guaranteed to be a storm.

Now I know why the reviews on this book range from "fantastic" to "nearly did not finish".
This book had a potential. The idea is fresh and original, and there are moments of greatness here.
But the execution of this idea is terrible.
1.The violence is excessive and most of the time unnecessary although truth be said it goes well with what I know of the old pantheons of gods.
2. The writing and descriptions are overly complicated and especially improbable from the mouths of teenagers. Does any sixteen-year old talk like that? Also their actions and pranks are hard to believe into too. They act like adults, with freedom to which adults accustomed, - it just left me confused.
3. When I finished the book I really wanted to swear. There are too many things happening, too many plot lines left unfinished. It feels like the story tries to appeal to our habit for sensationalism.
All in all it's a mess, but a mess with a potential for greatness. Now you'd better decide for yourself what you think of it and I'll be curious to hear about it, but moi? I'll think long and hard before tackling the next book in series.

5/10

In case of zombie apocalypse
Hey, guys! I feel like I should say this just in case :)
If you'd like to sponsor a fellow book addict who sometimes can't sleep at night worrying that she won't have enough books to read if internet goes down in the event of zombie apocalypse (I'm convinced it's one of the top five ways to go for human race) you can donate through Paypal to olivesandacorns at gmail dot com or buy a book through any of the links provided with my reviews which will send me a small percentage from the sale. All proceeds will go towards my enormous TBR. I will also shelter you on the remote farm in Portugal when zombie apocalypse starts provided you survive getting there. There will be books, yay?
Thank you! Love you all

I got this book from S & S as well. I'm only near the start so far, but it seems okay.. :)

I'm looking forward to your review, Steph :) You know how different are people's perceptions of everything. For me the book in general, despite some good moments didn't work. For other people it will.
Dang! To think I got so sold out after watching an interview on Karsten Knight. Hehe
If a copy ever comes into my possession, I'll let you know my thoughts on this.
Nice review as always! ^_^
