Long Lankin by Lindsey Barraclough (horror, not really YA)

Long Lankin by Lindsey Barraclough

Synopsis
A chilling, beautiful debut novel inspired by a haunting folk song about murder, witchcraft and revenge. Beware of Long Lankin, that lives in the moss ...When Cora and her little sister Mimi are sent to stay with their elderly aunt in the isolated village of Bryers Guerdon, they receive a less than warm welcome, and are desperate to go back to London. But Auntie Ida's life was devastated the last time two young girls were at Guerdon Hall, and now her nieces' arrival has reawaken an evil that has lain waiting for years. A haunting voice in an empty room ...A strange, scarred man lurking in the graveyard ...A mysterious warning, scrawled on the walls of the abandoned church ...Along with Roger and Peter, two young village boys, Cora must uncover the horrifying truth that has held Bryers Guerdon in its dark grip for centuries - before it is too late for Mimi. Intensely atmospheric and truly compelling, this is a stunning debut.

Br-r... It was all that. Scary, creepy and intense. You practically could hear the clock ticking in your head. Some parts of the book reminded my of A Nightmare on Elm Street, especially the song which Cora kept hearing.

The story is being told by three narrators. Cora, her great auntie Ida and local boy Roger. This type of writing only makes it richer and deeper. English poverty and lack of necessities in the 1950s just after war is described perfectly well.

Cora and Mimi are sent from London by their father to the countryside as he needs to work and can't look after them. What happened to their mother becomes clear after awhile. First 50 pages are slow and difficult to get into, but please don't give up - it gets better and better and more intense.

Ida tells Cora few strict rules: do not ever open any door or window in the house, do not go to the old closed church and never leave Mimi on her own. And like all the adults she doesn't explain why, which really irritated me. Children are small, they are not stupid. Knowing the dangers will prevent them from going and trying to find out what the adults are hiding.

So, what's to happen first thing Cora goes out and meets a local boy Roger with his little brother Pete? Right, the children go to the church.

What Cora doesn't know is that Guerdons' blood is cursed (her auntie is Guerdon by birth). A monster in each generation snatches little children, and now that tiny Mimi steps into the church yard, the monster is awake and after her.

Cora and Roger have to do what they can, uncover old family secrets and find out how to defeat the monster to save Mimi.

It's an absolutely brilliant book and I recommend it to anyone. The only question that bugged my was why Ida who obviously knew that little girls shouldn't be in her house didn't suggest to come to London with them and look after them until their mother is back? The woman had funds to do it, but the option never came up. Oh, well. We wouldn't have the story otherwise.

Favorite scene: the end.
